CBeebies show taken off air as it was ‘so scary’ — but actor says uproar was ‘daft’

A CBeebies show was dubbed “so scary” that angry parents demanded the Beeb to take it off the air – and they did.

It’s fair to say BBC children’s channel CBeebies is a staple in every kid’s childhood. From shows like the Tweenies to Balamory, the channel has left plenty of kids entertained over the years.

But one show appeared to rub up parents the wrong way with them dubbing it “inappropriate.” So much so, that they complained to the BBC to take it off the schedule.

Back in the ‘90s, Monster Café made its debut. The show, which ran for two series, followed three monster misfits working in the infamous Café, especially for ghouls and ghosts.

The three employees were female robot Frankie, played by Isobel Middleton, a hunchbacked Transylvanian called Igor, played by David Shimwell and a 6,000 year old Mummy, played by Toby Sedgwick.

Situated in the basement of a castle, the cafe was owned by the evil Baroness (played by Peta Lily) who often battled with her employees. The series originally aired from 1994–1995.

Monster Café was then repeated years later in the 2000s. However, in 2007, angry parents flooded the BBC Message Boards and the BBC directly with angry complaints.

According to them, it was scaring the young children watching the show and was to frightening to watch CBeebies. Broadcaster BBC then pulled Monster Café from the schedule.

And it seems for one of its stars, she thought the uproar was a bit silly. Actress Isobel Middleton played Frankie, a female robot who is the smartest of the three monsters.

When asked about how she felt that Monster Café had to be stopped due to scaring young children, she said to Jack’s Throwback Attack: “That sounds a bit daft!”

Isobel went on: “It was just a load of actors running around in glittery capes with tights on their heads doing stupid things! I knew it was very popular with students who liked to watch it after a night on the lash!”

Over on an online discussion forum on MumsNet, plenty of viewers shared their thoughts on the series. One person said: “I can see why people feel that Monster Cafe is unsuitable for CBeebies; quite apart from the fact that it’s (a) ancient and (b) crap, it was always going to be frightening for a lot of young children.”

Someone else penned: “I was sat watching Monster Cafe with the other day and thought that it wasn’t really appropriate for CBeebies age range.” While a third wrote: “Loved it. It was bridging the gap for the ones not quite old enough for cbbc.”
