Chilling similarity between the deaths of Paula Yates and daughter Peaches Geldof

Paula Yates and her daughter Peaches Geldof both passed away in very similar tragic circumstances 14 years apart.

After starting out as a music journalist, Paula found fame on Channel 4 starring alongside Jools Holland on pop music show, The Tube in the 1980s. She is best known, however, for her own segment on The Big Breakfast, in which she interviewed a variety of rock stars on a huge velvet bed.

After marrying Boomtown Rats frontman and Band Aid founder Bob Geldof, she went on to have three daughters, Peaches, Pixie and Fifi. In 1995, however, she left Geldof for INXS star Michael Hutchence – who she had previously interviewed on that very bed after embarking on an affair with him months beforehand.

After Paula gave birth to their child, Tiger Lily, however, Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room in Sydney just months later with his death recorded as a result of suicide by hanging. It marked the beginning of a series of tragedies for the family, with Paula dying in 2000 and Peaches 14 years later.

Now, 10 years on from Peaches’ tragic passing, we look back on the chilling similarities between her and mum Paula’s deaths.

Not only did Paula leave behind four daughters, but she also passed away on one of Pixie’s birthdays when she was 10-years-old – on September 17, 2000. She was found dead at her home in Notting Hill at the age of 41 following a heroin overdose.

The coroner from Paula’s case later issued a final ruling that her death was not suicide, but in fact a result of “foolish and incautious” behaviour. It was reported at the time that the Welsh presenter had taken too much of the drug whilst caring for her Tiger Lily, who was then aged just four.

Tiger’s godmother and Paula’s pal Belinda Brewin, meanwhile, had realised Paula had taken drugs when she turned up at her house the night before her death. She told The Sun she remembers asking Paula: “What have you been doing this for?” to which Paula blamed the pressure of being back and living in London.

Another of Paula’s friends, Jo Fairely, phoned Paula at 8.30am the next morning, only to be told by Tiger Lily her mum was still asleep. After a second call half-an-hour later, Jo became suspicious after Tiger gave the same response and decided to visit the property in person.

There, Tiger Lily had to stand on a chair to let Jo in – and as soon as she looked into Paula’s bedroom, she knew her friend was gone. Later, during searches of the home, police found a wrap of heroin on a bedside table and a rolled-up £5 note that contained traces of cocaine. Jo went on to say she believed Paula had spiraled out of control after Hutchence’s death.

Like Paula, Peaches went down the journalism route at the beginning of her career, writing for Elle Girl and later the Telegraph and the Guardian. After writing and presenting two documentaries for Sky One, she later moved into modelling, only to be fired by underwear brand Ultimo’s boss, Michelle Mone, following allegations of drug use – something Peaches strenuously denied.

By 2011 things were looking up however, as Peaches – now 22 – bagged her own ITV2 series, OMG! with Peaches Geldof. By this point she had already married and divorced first husband, Max Drummey. She soon met London musician Thomas Cohen, however, with whom she tied the knot in 2012 at the same Kent church her parents had 26 years earlier.

The pair had welcomed two sons, Astala and Phaedra, into the world by the end of 2013, but on April 7, 2014 her body was shockingly discovered at her home, also in Kent. Police discovered and seized drug paraphernalia at the scene, meanwhile.

A month after her funeral, an inquest opened into her tragic demise, and on July 23, the coroner ruled that the cause of her death was “opioid intoxication”, and recorded a verdict of drug-related death. The coroner, DCI Paul Fotheringham, of Kent Police, recorded there was no evidence to suggest it was deliberate.

It was also reported in the inquest that Peaches had been taking the maintenance drug methadone for two and a half years before her death. Court documents stated, however, she had started taking heroin again in February 2014 and 6.9 grams of the drug was found in the house.

On July 3, 2015, Kent Police announced that they had ended the investigation into her death, as they had “exhausted all lines of inquiry” trying to find who supplied Peaches with the Class A drug.

Just weeks before her death, Peaches had spoken about how “heroin is such a bleak drug” during her last interview with the Spectator. She told the publication: “I’m young, but people all know the same information about me. That’s the worst thing, the preconceptions. Your life, they keep telling you, is pre-ordained – I’m going to die like my mother. ‘She’s going to end up like her mother.'”
