EastEnders’ Natalie Cassidy has teased her soap exit following Sonia Fowler’s shock arrest.
Telly legend Sonia made her debut back in 1993 – and quickly became one of the soap’s most loved and iconic characters. And it’s fair to say, Sonia has played a part in some of the soap’s most memorable storylines too.
Sonia has had a rather dramatic few months, and fans will recall how earlier this week she was arrested for the murder of Debbie – who was fiancé Reiss’ (Jonny Freeman) comatose wife.
Reiss was the one who killed his wife, amid his money troubles and mounting debts. However, in Thursday’s bombshell (August 22) episode, pregnant Sonia ended up getting charged with her murder.
And now, actress Natalie Cassidy has teased that it’s not going to get any better for Sonia.
“It’s her worst nightmare coming true,” Natalie revealed when asked about how Sonia feels about getting charged with murder. She added: “She absolutely cannot believe it, especially when Reiss has been let off because he has an alibi.”
As for how Natalie feels about Reiss’ sinister true colours, she said she “can’t believe” the character has resorted to low measures. She went on: “To the point where she’s going to go down for it, and he doesn’t say, ‘This was me, I did this.’
“You are like, ‘Oh my god, he’s a psycho.’ It’s really shocking and dark; I look forward to seeing what happens next.”
And with a potential prison sentence and exit looming, Natalie was asked if anyone could save the long-running character. She cryptically replied: “Who knows? But she’s got a lot of champions there on the Square…”
It was reported in July that Natalie was taking a break from the soap and will appear in a Channel 4 four-part series titled What’s The Big Deal?
A source told The Sun of the project: “Natalie will be taking a short break, just like many of her co-stars do when they have another project. Bosses always try to let stars spread their wings and if they can make it work with the often punishing soap schedule then they’ll do it.
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
