Friends star unrecognisable in Australian interview 32 years after iconic storyline

One of Friends’ biggest stars forced fans to do a double take as she returned to TV screens 32 years after her well-known role.

Actress Jane Sibbett surprised viewers when she appeared on Australia’s The Morning show. The 61-year-old actor’s career began back in the mid 80s when she landed a role on the NBC soap opera Santa Barbra.

Over three decades after becoming a household name thanks to Friends, she has now been nominated for Best Newcomer at the Soap Opera Digest Awards following an incredibly successful television career.

She shot to fame in 1991 as Heddy Newman on the Fox sitcom Herman’s Head, which garnered a cult following, before landing a role on Friends. The American TV star played Ross Geller’s ex-wife Carol Willick in several episodes of the show from 1994 to 2001.

Jane’s character was famously a lesbian who, after marrying Ross, began a relationship with a character named Susan. At the time, the subject was quite controversial, reports the Mirror.

On Monday (July 1), Jane featured on The Morning Show to reflect on her time on the hugely popular seven-season series. In a surprising revelation, she disclosed that she almost didn’t secure the role of Carol because the casting team initially wanted her for the lead role of Rachel Green.

Jane Seymour auditioned for the role of Rachel but was rejected due to her pregnancy with her first child, Kai Fink. Host Kylie Gillies asked: “Is it true you were picked to play the part of Rachel Green, but because you were pregnant it ultimately went to Jennifer Aniston?”

Jane replied: “It’s actually that I had left the room from auditioning for Rachel and I got the phone call from my manager saying, “They love you. They want you.’

“So, I said, ‘Did you tell them that I was pregnant?’ And he said, ‘No, just go onto the test, it will be fine.’ That’s how it went.

“So once they did tell them I was pregnant, they said, “Oh, that’s not going to work out.” Thankfully, luck was on Jane’s side when she secured the role of Carol after delivering Kai.

The youngster even made an appearance on the show himself as Ross’ baby son Ben, acting alongside his mum. His character was later recast with Cole Sprouse taking on the role in 2000 until the show ended four years later.
