Gavin and Stacey fans have been left disappointed as co-creator Ruth Jones dismissed rumours of a “bidding war” for the show’s return.
The popular BBC sitcom, which aired from 2007 to 2010 and returned for a Christmas special in 2019, ended on a cliffhanger that has left fans hoping for more. Earlier this week, it was reported that there was a “bidding war” between the BBC and Netflix for a new episode of Gavin and Stacey.
It was also suggested that a Christmas special could be filmed this summer. Rumours have been circulating that Ruth, 57, and James Corden, 45, who both star in the show, are close to finalising the script.
It’s said that they’ve reached out to colleagues about a potential reunion. However, Ruth, known for her role as Nessa Jenkins, has called these reports “sadly a rumour” during an interview on RTE Radio 1. She revealed: “Apparently there’s a bidding war between the BBC and Netflix. Where does this stuff come from?”
She then chatted about meeting James for lunch in London after his return from the US. “We went for lunch in London a few months ago and we got papped. And then the next thing is ‘Oh my god they must be writing more Gavin and Stacey,’ which is lovely. It’s lovely that people love it and they’re so desperate for it,” she said.
Ruth expressed her thanks for the fans’ support, saying: “Imagine if it was the opposite and they were like ‘Oh god, they’re not bringing that back’.” But she added: “It’s sadly a rumour. I don’t know what to say.”
She stated: “All I can say is – if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it. You know, we would.” Ruth admitted she was “lost for words” over the rumours and said: “It’s hilarious.” She ended the interview by saying: “I dunno. I just have to smile.”
Fans shared their disappointment in the comments section. One person joked: “Cheers Ruth, kids are crying now.” Another reacted: “[My] heart has been ripped to shreds with this emotional rollercoaster.” A third person simply wrote: “Gutted.” Another fan commented: “Well that’s ruined my Christmas already and it’s only February.” Someone else responded: “I’m going to cry.” Another person said: “Devastated.” A final fan wrote: “Crying now.”
Many fans expressed their sadness at the news, with comments like “heartbroken,” and “Omg that’s ruined my year.” One fan even said: “Valentine’s Day utterly ruined.” Another simply stated: “So sad.” However, some fans are hopeful for a future return of the show. One fan speculated: “I don’t believe her, I think they’ve wrote a new series.” Another reminded: “You [have] done this before and said there wouldn’t be an Xmas special and there was.”
