GMB’s Susanna Reid left red-faced after Ben Shephard makes awkward on-air gaffe

Ben Shephard left his co-presenter Susanna Reid red-faced after he made an embarrassing faux pas live on air.

Ben, 49, returned to our screens once again to present ITV morning show Good Morning Britain on Thursday (February 1). He was presenting the show alongside Susanna Reid, who had been guiding viewers through the course of the week.

As the team delivered the main news stories for the day, the show was about to go to the local news. However, before then, Susanna and Ben were told to promote the upcoming debate they would be having later on in the programme.

Susanna explained that according a French sex worker, people who go to strip clubs are cheating on their partners. She added that the sex worker explained that it was the fact that money was being spent on the interactions and the emotionality of the cheating needed to be factored in.

However, it appeared that Susanna, 53, was not best pleased with the topic that they would be talking about. “I’m just saying, it’s thirteen minutes past seven…Do you class it as cheating if your partner goes to a strip club?” she asked through gritted teeth.

After explaining the premise and the context of the debate, she grimaced: “And we decided to do it as a debate this morning!” Ben, who was listening in, chimed in himself as he said: “Can we get some clearance for everybody who fancies it this weekend?”

Clearly unhappy with the quality of their work recently, Susanna hit out at bosses at the show, making a dig at producers. “Oh my goodness, I thought yesterday’s debate about peeing in the woods was going too far!” she lamented.

However, Ben was quick to jump in to offer his own opinion: “No, I enjoyed yesterday’s debate, I’m all for it!” Ben’s admission triggered Susanna to hold her head in her hands as news reporter Marverine Cole was left stunned at what he had said.

As she tried to steady the show once again and get on with the promo before going to the local news, she asked her co-star: “What do you think about going to a strip club, Ben?” To which Shephard replied: “Yeah, not really my bag – I find them a bit boring”.

Ben quipped that he watched the interview with the French sex worker in full in order to “properly do his research”, to which he explained that she said that by building a rapport with these sex workers, men invest emotions and money into it, which muddies the waters. He also said: “I’d rather go with a couple of mates and laugh.”

The Tipping Point host then asked Susanna whether she believed it was a good idea, to which she said no. She asked him the same question, which left him hitting: “Well, it’s just not my bag. If people fancy going to it, that’s up to them.”

Ben tried to end off the conversation by quipping: “I just wanna play some darts, if I’m honest.” But a mischievous Susanna hit back with a sly jab at her co-host, taking on an exaggerated theatre voice to quip: “Methinks you doth protest too much, Ben Shephard!”

The pair ended the segment by asking people at home what they thought of the topic, as Susanna called for interaction, asking: “Let us know what you think, do you think it’s cheating if you go to a strip club.” Ever one to have the last word, Ben sneaked in one last jibe: “Asking for a friend,” which left Reid in stitches.

Good Morning Britain airs every weekday at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
