Green Day looked unrecognisable as they posed alongside Avril Lavigne at the iHeartRadio Awards this week.
The trio headed to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood 20 years after the release of their hit track Wake Me Up When September Ends, and looked totally different to their early days in the music industry. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong is now rocking spiky blonde hair – a stark contrast to his darker locks – while drummer Tré Cool and bassist Mike Dirnt posed on either side of him.
Still clearly going for the punk look, Billie Joe, now 52, rocked a bright red three-piece suit with a black shirt underneath, while Tré, 51, opted for a crinkly gold blouse under a black blazer. Mike, also 51, rocked a black and pink blazer with BOBBY SOX emblazoned on one pocket (a nod to their Saviours track) and a high collar.

They were soon joined by Sk8r Boi hitmaker Avril Lavigne on the red carpet, who rocked a cut-out black t-shirt and cargo pants with her blonde hair worn straight down to her waist and tattoos on display.
Green Day were honoured with the Landmark Award at the ceremony, with Avril congratulating them: “Congrats @greendays on receiving the Landmark Award at the @iheartradio Awards last night. Your influence runs deep and is forever etched in rock history!”
It comes 12 years after Billie Joe had a “meltdown” at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas while performing their hit Basket Case. Organisers told them to wrap it up partway through the track, with the lead vocalist fuming: “Give me a f***ing break. One minute left? You’re gonna give me one f***ing minute?
“Let me tell you something. I’ve been around since 19 f***ing 88. And you’re gonna give me one f***ing minute? I’m not Justin Bieber, you motherf****rs.” He then smashed up his guitar on stage and gave a finger to the audience before promising: “We’ll be back.”
The star later entered rehab for alcohol and prescription pills, recalling the incident in a 2020 interview that his wife told him “it’s bad” after the incident. Thankfully the band redeemed themselves at this year’s awards, with Billie Joe delighting fans with the demo lyrics from Basket Case at the ceremony.
