‘Hideous’ Sinead O’Connor waxwork removed as brother fumes ‘it’s nothing like her’

A waxwork model of Sinead O’Connor, which her brother called “hideous”, has officially been axed.

The Irish singer-songwriter, best known for her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U”, tragically passed away last July at the age of 56. Her death sent shockwaves around the world as people came together to remember the troubled songstress.

Following her death, Ireland commissioned a custom-made waxwork of the star, to be displayed at the National Wax Museum in Dublin. On Thursday morning (July 25), the completed figure was unveiled on the one-year anniversary of her death.

However, fans were not impressed with the finished piece and flooded social media fuming that the figure looked “nothing like her”. Now, Dublin’s wax museum has withdrawn it from the display.

The company reassured fans of the hitmaker that it “can do better” and pledged to create a “more accurate representation” of the star. It comes after her brother John O’Connor said he was “shocked” when he first saw it online and was unaware it was to be unveiled.

He said: “I thought it looked something between a mannequin and something out of the Thunderbirds. I thought Sinead would have been very fond of looking well, and she certainly did.

“If it was supposed to be a representation of her in her early 20s when she did Nothing Compares 2 U, it just looked nothing like her. I thought it was hideous.”

O’Connor said it was particularly upsetting to speak about the issue as his family mourned her loss on the milestone anniversary. A friend had told him he’d “seen better” in the window of the department store Shaws.

“If people wanted to honour the memory of the Irish singer they should put a statue of her in Dublin,” he added. “I lost my sister and to me that’s important.

“The world may have lost a star, and they did, but I lost my sister. It just should not have been put there even without checking with somebody ‘is this all right?’”

Wax museum director Paddy Dunning apologised to the family for the waxwork and said “my heart sunk a bit” when he saw the figure. He added: “I had to take the decision to cancel the statue and we’ll go again and we’ll remodel and we have to do better on this occasion.”

The museum went on: “We acknowledge that the current representation did not meet our high standards or the expectations of Sinead’s devoted fans”.
