Soap fans have been sent into meltdown by an unexpected Hollyoaks and EastEnders crossover.
Fans of the Channel 4 serial drama were left gobsmacked in recent scenes as Freddie Rosoe (Charlie Clapham) returned to the village to help Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe).
Mercedes’ ex Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) was far from happy to see Freddie back and they ended up in a violent showdown. However, after things quietened down, Freddie caught up with Mercedes and half-brother Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson) over a drink in the Dog.

Conversation soon turned what he’s been up to since leaving the village seven years ago and Freddie revealed he had spent time in prison so that he didn’t lose daughter Lexi, who was now living with his mum in South Africa. Viewers will know that Freddie’s mum, Sandy Roscoe, was played by EastEnders legend Gillian Taylforth, who currently portrays the role Kathy Beale in the rival BBC Soap.

When Kathy left Walford back in 1998, she moved to South Africa to be with brother Ted Hills. In 2006, news reached Walford that Kathy had been killed in a car accident, but years later, fans were left shocked to learn that she was actually still alive.
Sandy Roscoe left the Hollyoaks village in 2015, and her move to South Africa appeared to be a cheeky joke in reference to Kathy’s ill-fated trip, and eagled-eyed viewers were quick to pick up on it. However, that isn’t where the EastEnders crossover ended.

When Mercedes asked how Sandy was doing, Freddie gave her a quick update. He explained: “She’s good. Working as a carer, giving sponge baths to these two old luvvies, Kev and Bry.” Hollyoaks and EastEnders fans may recognise the names Kevin Rundle and Bryan Kirkwood, who are the ‘Kev and Bry’ Freddie was referring to.
While Kevin was a long-running scriptwriter for the Channel 4 soap, Bryan served as Hollyoaks producer, with both leaving their roles in 2020 but they now both work on EastEnders as scriptwriters, having penned countless episodes between them. Fans took to social media to discuss the hilarious moment.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: “Lol@ @Hollyoaks I see what you did there Sandy in South Africa, no doubt she’ll move to london in a few years #Hollyoaks.” Another added: “PMSL at the fact Gillian Taylforth played both Sandy in #hollyoaks and Kath #eastenders but ended up married to Gansters, running away to South Africa and both ended up with a granddaughter named Lexi.” A third persona greed: “Love how all British soaps have unanimously agree that if Gillian Taylforth is written out the show, she must be sent to South Africa.”
Hollyoaks airs weeknights on E4 at 7pm and first look episodes can be streamed Channel 4 at 7.30pm
