Hollywood icon Shelley Duvall who starred in The Shining and Nashville dies aged 75

Hollywood actress Shelley Duvall, best known for her roles in Popeye and The Shining, has sadly died.

She was best known for playing Wendy Torrace in The Shining, one of the most iconic horror films ever made. She starred alongside Jack Nicholson and quickly became a household name.

Duvall also starred in Popeye, Nashville, 3 Women and McCabe & Mrs Miller. The Hollywood Reporter said: “Duvall died in her sleep of complications from diabetes at her home in Blanco, Texas, Dan Gilroy, her life partner since 1989, told The Hollywood Reporter.”

The Hollywood Reporter posted the news on X/Twitter and a number of comments flooded in with tributes to Shelley. One person wrote: “Very sad news. Her performance in [The] Shining was immortal.”

Another person typed: “Oh no. Rest in heavenly peace, Shelley Duvall [broken heart, dove and sparkle emoji].” Others gathered in the comment section to write “RIP” and brand the actress a “legend” and a “icon”.

Wendy Torrance was perhaps her most iconic role

For many years, Shelley had stepped away from the limelight and back in 2016 she appeared on an episode of Dr Phil. Duvall revealed that she was suffering from mental illness and told the host: “I am very sick. I need help.”

She famously spoke out about her role as Wendy Torrance and revealed that director Stanley Kubrick has her “crying for 12 hours a day for weeks on end.” In an interview with People, Shelley said: “I will never give that much again. If you want to get into pain and call it art, go ahead, but not with me.”

The cast and crew went through a gruelling 13 month long shoot to finish the film adaptation of Stephen King’s legendary horror. Duvall played Wendy, Jack Torrance’s wife and Danny’s mother who is forced to spend one fateful winter in the Overlook Hotel.

She was known for her often eccentric characters. Duvall took a 21-year hiatus from acting and kept her personal life very private, but returned to acting back in 2022 for the horror film The Forest Hills.

The IMDb description reads: “Haunted by nightmares, Rico descends into madness in the Catskill Mountains.”
