Home and Away has been rocked by a recent slew of former cast members stepping back from the show.
Some of the show’s biggest stars including Patrick O’Connor, Sophie Dillman and Courtney Miller have bid the show farewell. However, the show has been able to retain many of its long-term bookings including Emily Symons, Ada Nicodemou and Georgie Parker as they have been part of the soap for a long time.
According to Yahoo! Lifestyle, bosses at the Australian soap, which airs in the UK on Channel 5, often contract new additions for about three years. As the character heads towards the end of their contract, actors and producers can decide among themselves how long to extend the deal to stay in Summer Bay.

But over the last couple of years, some of the show’s biggest stars have been calling time on their stints on the soap. As a result, this has left bosses and fans alike unsure of the potential future for the decades-old programme.
Now, Matt Evans – who is a favourite among viewers – has given his thoughts on how the show’s future will pan out. Evans, who plays Theo Poulos on the show told Yahoo! Lifestyle that it was an emotional time as he had to say goodbye to many of his soap friends.
“There’s so many people who would come and go on the show, so it’s kind of like high school,” he confessed. “If I was to finish, it would be like when you finish high school and you’ve got to say goodbye to everyone.”
Matt also revealed that the cast and crew often have a small shindig in order to wish the departing cast member off in style. People also give the actor a rousing speech, thanking them for their work on the show, showing the community of the soap.
Recalling previous experiences, Matt explained that it was “really sad”, but added that “it’s really exciting” when someone new comes along to join the programme. “It’s an emotional rollercoaster, with people coming and going, and you’ve just gotta keep navigating your relationships around that.”
For Matt himself, he has neither confirmed nor denied whether he will be staying at Summer Bay. Having made his first appearance in September 2021, he is nearing the end of his contract, and will be in talks with writers on where Theo goes from here.
However, having embedded himself into some of the soap’s key plots, Theo leaving would pose a dilemma for writers. As a result, Matt has kept his cards close to his chest, adding that he still has time left on his contract to make his mind up, while he continues to “play it by ear”.
