House of the Dragon star feared he’d be axed from ‘intimidating’ HBO show in shocking way

House of the Dragon star Jamie Kenna worried he’d get axed from the HBO hit.

The actor plays Ser Alfred Broome, a member of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) Black Council, in the Game of Thrones prequel. But he’s revealed he was constantly worrying that he’d end up getting the chop (not literally).

Kenna discussed the nightmare sacking scenario at House of the Dragon’s season two premiere in London’s Leicester Square. He told Daily Star and The Independent: “Throughout the whole process I felt like someone was gonna ring me and go ‘I’m so sorry, there’s been a mistake’.

Luckily, no such phone call occured and he ended up getting a warm welcome from Matt Smith, who plays Rhaenyra’s ruthless and bloodthirsty uncle Daemon in the show. It appears he’s much more friendly in real life.

“But they didn’t [sack me]! I turned up and had my first day with Matt Smith and he welcomed me with open arms. He’s such a legend. He’s such a good guy and a phenomenal actor. Right from the off I just felt at home.”

Asked how he got into character, he said: “When you dress into those costumes and walk onto that set, it’s almost impossible not to get into character. When you stand around that table and it’s lit and everything looks so epic, the mood just drops and it gets really hot and you struggle not to get into character. It’s amazing. What a phenomenal experience.”

Although being on set was pretty scary, he explained, it was an absolute privilege to work with such “generous” actors. Asked if he got any advice from Matt, Emma or Olivia Cooke [Alicent Hightower], he said: “It’s so intimidating. I think if they start giving you advice, it’s sort of counter-productive. I think what they do is just let you do your thing.

“They give you everything because they’re such generous actors, and then you just play. That’s what we do as actors, we play and we create and they’re so good and they’re so professional, they know what they’re doing. You can’t help but take the baton and add it into this big cake of fire.”

House of the Dragon season 2 is now available to stream on HBO Max, Sky Go and Now TV.
