Ian McKellen heard ‘screaming in pain’ after ‘really bad fall’ off stage as fans concerned

Theatre-goers have shared their concerns as Sir Ian McKellen was whisked away to hospital following a tumble off the stage during his performance.

The 85 year old acting legend, took a spill in the midst of an intense scene in the production of Player Kings at the Noel Coward theatre on Monday night (June 17). Portraying John Falstaff, McKellen was engaged in a clash with the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when he misstepped and plummeted from the stage’s edge.

As the house lights came up, the actor cried out in pain and staff rushed to his aid. The audience was quickly ushered out the theatre and it was announced that the show would not go on for the evening.

Fans flocked to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to express their worries for the esteemed actor. One concerned spectator recounted the incident as a “really bad fall”, reports the Mirror.

“Just witnessed Ian Mckellan severely injure himself after falling off stage at Noel Coward Theatre. Sir Ian could be heard screaming in pain as ushers rushed to his aid. Show cancelled as he is treated by ambulance crews. Wish him all the best,” penned another distressed audience member.

Theatre-goers were left in shock as Sir Ian McKellen took a nasty tumble off the stage at the Noel Coward Theatre. One concerned fan tweeted: “Audience shocked by Sir Ian McKellen’s fall off stage tonight at Noel Coward Theatre. Staff working hard to help him. Thoughts with him, cast and crew.”

Fans claimed they heard him scream out

Another chimed in, saying: “It was a really bad fall. I hope that he is OK.” A third added their voice to the concern: “Shocking to watch, it was a terrible fall. Hoping he is not badly injured, he seemed to be in great pain.”

Someone else in the audience shared their confusion: “Wasn’t sure if it was part of the play. He sounded in a bad way. Hope he’s ok.” And yet another echoed the sentiment: “It was very shocking indeed. Praying he is OK.”

A statement has said Ian is in ‘good spirits’ now

Executives at London’s Noel Coward Theatre have since issued a statement on Ian. They said: “Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits.

“The production has made the decision to cancel the performance on Tuesday 18 June so Ian can rest,” the statement continues. “Those affected will be contacted by their point o f purchase as soon as possible tomorrow.”
