Yung Filly has had a rapid rise to fame in recent years and below we take a look inside his life.
Growing up
His real name is Andres Felipé Barrientos and he was born in Colombia in August 1995 before he moved to Britain aged two as a refugee.
He eventually settled in southeast London as a child and he spoke to Indy100 about his early life.
“I come from the bottle of the barrel,” he said. “And that’s why I’m so grateful for the position I’m in now. My mum definitely shaped me with the lessons she taught me.“She’s a single mum with three kids, my dad was a s*** dad so she just had to make it happen.
“She did loads of cleaning jobs. My mum worked at Poundland at the time I had some mad BBC series…just getting my mum out of the position she was in was just the biggest motivation.”
He lived in Lewisham above a chicken shop alongside his mum and two siblings. Filly, who said his household was loud, started posting YouTube videos aged 12 and he made cash by selling Lucozade bottles in the school playground.
And asked about what life was like, he said: “Struggle… ketchup and rice. I’m most proud of the fact I was a refugee. I’m proud that I had struggle. It makes you appreciate all of the lit stuff a lot more. I don’t think I took in how poor we was.
“But it makes me so much more grateful, because I’ve lived in the worst of the worst situations.”
After his mum’s birthday, he posted a photo of her on social media at the Shard in October 2020 and said: “It’s my QUEENS BDAY! She is the reason I do what I do, everything I do is for her! So thank her lol she’s the reason you guys get content from me. She had it hard growing up.. now I have retired her! LOVE YOU MAMA.”
Success
He made a name for himself by collaborating with Beta Squad alongside Chunkz and Deji Olatunji. He also featured in Sidemen videos alongside Deji’s brother KSI.
Yung Filly appeared in comedic YouTube videos, which included practical jokes, and amassed millions of views before Beta Squad split in 2021.
He later focused his attention on music and teamed up with famous artists like Aitch and Chipmunk and he hosted the 2022 MOBO Awards.
Over the years he broke into mainstream television and presented BBC’s Hot Property, appeared on Soccer Aid and starred in Channel 4’s The Great Celebrity Bake Off.
Proudest moment
Yung Filly revealed on the Jonathan Ross Show that he used his fortunes to retire his mum.
He said: “She used to work in Poundland. And it got to the point where when she was working in Poundland, people were seeing the resemblance between me and her.”
Speaking about ringing her to tell her to stop working, he added: “She didn’t know how to take it. So the months went on, she’s still working and I call her again like ‘mum, I’m serious now, you ain’t got to work again’.”
He later said his biggest achievement was giving his mum a better life and paying off her debt. The rapper also said “materialistic things ain’t s**t”.
“I’m just proud of myself,” he added. “And I don’t tell myself enough, I’ve smashed it.”
