ITV axes game show hosted by national treasure – after promising it would return

ITV’s Epic Gameshow has been unexpectedly given the boot, though host Alan Carr seems unperturbed by it.

Previously announced that it was being put on hold, the Mirror now indicates the show won’t return. The popular programme debuted in 2020 and ran for three successful seasons which tugged at viewers’ nostalgia with throwbacks to old-time game shows.

However, over a year later, apparent moves have been made by ITV to permanently scrap the show. According to insiders, the host Alan isn’t expected to be overly troubled by this decision, due to his extensive range of other projects.

The insider claimed: “Alan won’t be taking this too hard as the three seasons Epic Gameshow ran for on ITV were well received and it’s not like he’s short of other projects. On ITV alone, he has a prime-time game show Password coming up later this year, as well as a second series of his autobiographical comedy-drama Changing Ends.”

The news comes after there won’t be another season of Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream, ITV confirmed earlier this month. The telly series followed the hunt for two stars to step into the shoes of Sophie and Sky in the West End’s Mamma Mia! for its 25th-anniversary bash.

Zoe Ball, the 53-year-old telly veteran, hosted the show while the judges’ table was graced by Chatty Man Alan, aged 47. The funnyman was flanked by stage legends Amber Riley, 38, and Samantha Barks, 33, with songstress Jessie Ware, 39, rounding off the panel.

Zoe dropped a hint that Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream might not be back for round two on her BBC Radio 2 morning gig earlier this week. She had a chinwag with her old mate Alan on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show last Friday.

At the time, Zoe said: “Aww d’you know what? We’re not going back to Corfu [where the show was filmed] – it’s a shame. This time last year – packing our bags to go.”

Alan chimed in with: “I loved doing that show.”
