Janet Jackson, has been very open about her sex life over the years.
The youngest of nine Jackson children and brother of the King of Pop, Michael, celebrates her birthday today (May 16). It would seem her lyrics proved to be a huge hint about a deep sexual desire she claims she’d been harbouring as a youngster.
She grew up in the spotlight. At the age of just seven, she was performing alongside her sisters in Las Vegas, at the MGM Casino. At age ten, Janet kicked off her acting career starring in the variety television series The Jacksons.

Being a public figure was all she’d ever known and it was years before Janet would go on to realise that even as a child she’d had a very “sexual mind”. As years went by, Janet became one of the most profound artists of her time, producing innovative, socially conscious and sexually provocative records.
She used lustful lyrics as a means to break free from the shackles of being a child star. Her music also proved to be a form of expression about her insatiable sex drive.
Sex on the brain
Janet once confessed that she thinks about sex non-stop. In an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel the All For You hitmaker confessed: “I have sex in my head all the time.”
When quizzed over her insatiable sex drive, the chart topper concluded that she must have inherited it from her parents. She said: “In the end, they had nine children. They must have been at it like rabbits.”
Michael taught Janet about sex
In 2006, Janet revealed in an interview with VIBE magazine, where she featured on the cover, that she’d actually first learned about sex from her brother Michael, when she was 12. However, she later confessed to Blender, a now defunct magazine, that she’d always had a “sexual mind” even as a child.
When growing up, she’d practise kissing some of her celebrity crushes – Barry Manilow and Teddy Pendergrass – when they were on the screen. She explained: “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realise that I had a very active sexual mind at a very young age.
“I hope that doesn’t sound bad. When you’re a kid, you have little fantasies, but I saw myself being with him [Manilow] as an adult, not as a kid,” added Janet.
Sexual liberation
As a childhood star Janet had a tough time breaking free from her innocent image and when she rebranded herself in her late 20s she almost had a point to prove about her suggestive and provocative lyrics and moves. In 1993, appearing on the Rolling Stones front cover, she revealed how important sex was to her.
She said: “Look, sex has been an important part of me for several years. But it just hasn’t blossomed publicly until now.
She added: “I’ve had to go through some changes and shed some old attitudes before feeling completely comfortable with my body. Listening to my new record, people intuitively understand the change in me.”
“I love feeling deeply sexual”
In the same Rolling Stone’s interview, Janet went on to detail how sex had impacted her life. The hitmaker told the publication that intimacy should be celebrated as she spoke freely about her desires.
She explained: “You see, sex isn’t just fire and heat, it’s natural beauty. Doing what comes naturally. It’s letting go, giving and getting what you need.”
Janet added: “In the age of AIDS, it certainly requires being responsible. On a psychological level, though, good sex, satisfying sex, is also linked with losing yourself, releasing, using your body to get out of your body.
“Well, for the first time, I’m feeling free. I love feeling deeply sexual–and don’t mind letting the world know. For me, sex has become a celebration, a joyful part of the creative process.”
Nipplegate
One scandalous performance was Janet’s performance with Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl in 2004. Fans still talk about the infamous Nipplegate that took place during the half-time show.
The pair were performing Justin’s hit track Rock Your Body, when he reached over to rip off a piece of her PVC corset and left her bare breast completely exposed. She was understandably embarrassed after the incident, and explained: “It’s truly embarrassing for me to know that [140million] people saw my breast, and then to see it blown up on the Internet the size of a computer screen.”
After the red faced incident the world was sent into meltdown and Janet’s career hit the rocks. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey sometime after Nipplegate, the Together Again star confirmed it “wasn’t planned”.
They had agreed that Justin would tear off a piece of her outfit but her bra underneath was supposed to remain in tact, instead Justin actually ripped it all of exposing just a metal nipple cover.
Despite the atrocity, Justin did speak out issuing a statement to defend Janet. According to the That’s The Way Love Goes singer, it’s all water under the bridge. She said: “There are no hard feelings, me and Justin have moved on and so should everybody else.”
