TV writing legend Kay Mellor reportedly left a whopping £13.2 million fortune to her family.
The creative genius behind TV hits like Band of Gold and Fat Friends who sadly passed away in May 2022 just days after celebrating her 71st birthday.
Starting her career writing plays before working on Coronation Street and creating the award-winning children’s drama Children’s Ward, Mellor was one of Britain’s most esteemed TV writers.

She also penned BBC One’s women’s football series Playing The Field and was honoured with an OBE in 2010. Her Bafta-nominated series Fat Friends, which centred around members of a slimming group in Leeds, boasted a star-studded cast including James Corden, Ruth Jones, Alison Steadman and Mellor’s youngest daughter, Gaynor Faye.
Following her death, it emerged that Mellor’s estate had a net value of £13,231,014, rising to a gross value of £14,640,914. Mellor’s will allocated money into trust for her husband Anthony, her two daughters – Emmerdale and Coronation Street actor Gaynor and television producer Yvonne Francas – and her extended family.
According to the Daily Mail, she expressed a wish for her body to be buried and for all her personal belongings and business property to be given to her husband. The sudden and untimely passing of renowned TV producer Kay Mellor was announced by a spokesperson for her production company, Rollem Productions, who said: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely and sudden passing of our beloved friend, mentor and colleague Kay Mellor on Sunday 15th May 2022. We have lost a phenomenal talent and a true luminary. We ask that you please respect the privacy of the family and friends at this time.”, reports the Mirror.
BBC’s chief content officer, Charlotte Moore, expressed her shock and deep sadness over Mellor’s sudden demise in a statement: “I’m shocked and deeply saddened to hear that Kay Mellor has suddenly passed away. Kay was an outstanding writer and the creative force behind many of the nation’s best-loved television dramas. She wrote with such heart, humanity, humour and passion with strong female characters often taking centre stage. She will be missed and our thoughts are with her friends and family at this difficult time.”
Kay Mellor, who tied the knot with her husband Anthony in 1968, was remembered fondly by Katherine Morley, her co-worker on The Syndicate. Morley paid tribute to Mellor in a heartfelt Twitter post, writing: “I am in complete shock and utterly heartbroken to hear about Kay Mellor. She showed me so much kindness from the moment we met and she made everyone’s lives that bit brighter. I’m honoured to have known her and even more grateful for the opportunity she gave me.”
In 2017, Mellor reminisced about her career highlights on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, selecting The Beautiful South’s Perfect 10′, the theme tune from Fat Friends, as one of her tracks. She shared: “It was such a lovely time of my life, it was a drama that was really important to me because I thought I had something to say about weight and body image.”
