Lost Monty Python sketches discovered in Michael Palin’s notebooks decades later

Unseen sketches from Monty Python were uncovered in TV legend Sir Michael Palin’s archives.

The comedy group – made up of Palin, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Terry Jones – produced their final film 41 years ago. But the broadcaster discovered boxes of “lost” material more than four decades after their last project.

The hidden archive was deposited at the British Library back in 2017 and was later revealed to contain unused script ideas. This included two sketches written for Monty Python and The Holy Grail.

According to The Times, one of the sketches is about a Wild West bookshop while the other features an “amorous Pink Knight.” They have since gone on display to the public, along with more than 50 notebooks containing notes on two of the Pythons’ films, Holy Grail and Life of Brian.

According to the newspaper, much of the material was deemed controversial at the time and was subsequently discarded and would even be considered too risqué today. The 81-year-old gave permission for the sketches to be reproduced and admitted the group often produced more material than they needed.

He explained: “Sometimes you have things like that. I can’t think why it wasn’t used. The Holy Grail took shape gradually and at the beginning it had far more ideas in it than ended up on screen because you had to have a narrative.

“In the end, the story of the knights was strong enough.” The archive spans the writer, actor, comedian and TV presenter’s literary and creative life for more than 20 years dating between 1965 to 1987.

It comes after his co-star John Cleese had a recent spat with Palin after John branded him “slightly boring” on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show. When the host asked him how Palin has been doing, Cleese joked: “Michael is just the same, sweet, kind, slightly boring man.”

Weeks later, Palin sent back his own jab during an appearance on This Morning back in May. He told viewers: “John is scintillating, we all know that. It’s in his passport.

“I really enjoy playing boring characters, and I’ve done a few, including the most boring man in Yorkshire, Eric Olthwaite [from Palin’s comedy series Ripping Yarns]. But you know, you just talk about rainfall all the time, and shovels.

“And putting a shovel next to the other one. It really irritates people who think they’re interesting. You go back to Python, and I always played the boring character, but John couldn’t have done without me.

“You had to have someone selling the parrot, or someone in the argument sketch to play off. So I think I’m going to continue to bask in John’s compliment that I’m boring. The more boring I can be, the better.”

Monty Pytho’s Life of Brian was first released on this day (August 17) back in 1979.
