Love Island’s Maya Jama suffered accident on first work trip abroad as she shares snap

The 29-year old sufferred an accident in Cyprus more than a decade ago on what was her “first work trip abroad” and has now recalled the time on social media. The incident is understood to have occurred in the tourist hotspot of Ayia Napa, where Maya was employed in 2012.

Love Island host Maya Jama has recalled being hospitalised on her first overseas job

Maya previously alluded to the injury on PrettyLittleThing’s Behind Closed Doors podcast in 2019, however. “I went to Ayia Napa when I was 17 to host Charlie Sloth’s Fire in the Booth. The bottom of my foot was hanging off,” she said.

“I had to be in hospital for two days and ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of the time. I ripped a nerve which meant that I couldn’t feel it. So I was getting carried into the ambulance like ‘Wahey’ loving it, not knowing that I may not be able to bend my f***ing toes.”

Maya recently discussed her acceptance of her Love Island job offer, meanwhile. Speaking to Vogue, she explained: “My manager called me and was like ‘So, if Love Island offered you, what would you say?’ And I was like, ‘yeah’.

“I was actually in the middle of the time where I was like, ‘I’m gonna take some time off this air and just really allowing myself you know, have a normal life for a bit’ and then that came up and I was like ‘alright, time off done. Let’s f***ing go’.”

Maya, who replaced former host Laura Whitmore, continued: “It’s the show where I’ve been able to showcase my personality and just have complete freedom with my looks and glam which doesn’t always happen in TV as you need to go get approval etc.

“And so Love Island is probably the first show where they’ve been like, ‘We want you to be you. Wear what you like, do your makeup however you like and just shine’.”

Love Island All Stars airs nightly on ITV2 and ITVX at 9pm
