Music icon announces retirement after 60-year career as farewell tour confirmed

British music legend Lulu has shared some huge news with fans.

The 75-year-old Scottish singer will hit the road for the final time in April as she announces her retirement from touring following a 60-year career in music.

Her final show of the Champagne For Lulu tour will be at the London Palladium on April 17, marking the 60th anniversary of her hit single Shout, released when she was just 15 years old.

Speaking to Gyles Brandreth on his Rosebud podcast, Lulu said: “This is actually – I’m announcing it for the first time now – this is my farewell tour, with family, and friends. Because last year I did a tour that was kind of gruelling – it was successful, it went well – but you need an army to be a success in your career these days.”

During her impressive career, the star has had ten Top Ten singles including Relight My Fire with boyband Take That. She sang the title track for the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun and won the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1969 with her song Boom Bang-a-Bang.

Speaking about her upcoming tour, she said: “I’m not going to tell you exactly what I’m going to do, but of course I’ll have to do Boom Bang-a-Bang. The audience want to do it by themselves anyway. You can’t not give people what they want – and more. If you’ve ever seen me on tour, just let me say, you won’t have seen me like this.”

Hinting she may concentrate on her acting, Lulu added: “I turned 75, and I thought, ‘You know what, I want to carry on working, but I want to do it a different way’. I’ve learned. And I’ve also become a slightly different person. I’m not afraid to be vulnerable.”

Lulu rose to fame following her debut 1964 hit Shout, and has continued to perform around the world. She previously revealed to OK! Magazine that this tour may be her last before officially confirming the news. The star said: “It’s definitely weird that I still do what I do, but I’m lucky I don’t have to be dragged, carried or wheeled on stage.

“At this point people say, ‘Is this gonna be your last tour?’ And I think, ‘Wow, that’s a question.’ But yes, actually. Possibly.” Lulu went on to explain that, while she might not keep up the singing for the rest of her career, that doesn’t mean she has a retirement plan. Instead, she would use the time to concentrate on her other talents.

“Now I want to focus on my acting,” she revealed. “I always think, ‘What am I going to do next? What’s coming up? What am I going to plan?’ I mean I got into the film business when I was 16 when I starred in To Sir With Love, so it feels like it’s come full circle.”
