Noughties music icon opens up on hidden health condition after fans accuse him of ‘lying’

Basshunter has opened up about his hidden health condition after fans have accused him of “lying”.

The noughties music legend, 39, has spoken to the Daily Star about his battle with Tourettes and how well he can mask it in front of others after “training himself for years”.

The Now You’re Gone singer exclusively said: “First of all, I can control my ticks pretty well which is something I’ve trained myself to do for over many, many years. That doesn’t mean that it’s not there.

“I can feel it all the time. If I lose my focus, I will start ticking. I often get messages like, ‘You don’t have Tourettes blah, blah, blah’.”

The star then explained that he is able to control it but has to let out “steam” when he is alone. He added: “Because I don’t show it, but I let the steam out when no one is around. I have this ability to control it, which for a lot of people, they can’t do.

“I’m trying to basically inspire them and to tell them how I did it. It might not work for them, but it might put them on the right track to getting some form of control over it.

“But I think for a lot of people, just seeing someone successful or famous that openly has Tourettes, that will help them. I wish I had one of those when I was 13 or 14. For the most part, it’s tearing you apart, and then you have ticks and you’re trying to sit quietly in a math classroom, it’s literally a nightmare.”

The singer and DJ also noted how things have progressed over the lat two decades and that he appreciates there is a better understanding for the condition nowadays.

Basshunter added: “But also, 20 years ago, people didn’t really have much understanding. I mean, they gave the same medicine for Tourettes that they gave for ADHD, and it turned me into a zombie.

“So it was either I sit there and I sound like a bloody jungle, or I sleep on my desk. Either way, I didn’t learn anything. But anyway, I think now people have a little bit more understanding. It’s spoken about more now and people do get it more.”
