Only Fools and Horses fans only just realising major Hollywood star’s role in sitcom

Only Fools and Horses fans have been left baffled after discovering a major Hollywood star appeared in an episode of the classic sitcom.

Christopher Lloyd, best known for his role as Doc Brown in the Back to the Future movies – along with roles in everything from The Addams Family to Who Framed Roger Rabbit – actually popped up as Grandad in a US pilot of Only Fools, which never really took off.

The US pilot was set to air on ABC in the States, but proved so terrible it was never shown. Titled Kings of Van Nuys, the episode would have featured Moulin Rouge star John Leguizamo as Del Trotter, True Blood’s BJ Bales as Trigger and Dustin Ybarra as Donnie Trotter.

The official synopsis for the pilot promises: “The misadventures of two streetwise brothers and their aging grandfather as they concoct outrageous, morally questionable get-rich-quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires.”

But on IDMb, the episode has an average rating of just 2.3 out of 10. Fans on Reddit, who have only just discovered an American spin-off was ever ordered, were left baffled by the revelation.

One wrote: “It’s amazing how many attempts there have been at remaking UK shows in the US, seeing how almost all of them after the 70s, when it was rather difficult to get the originals, have failed.” Another posted: “First Red Dwarf and now this?!”

Someone else said: “Wow, there’s not a lot of Only Fools & Horses left in the DNA of the end product, which is about as generic a sitcom can get. Why did they bother?” Another fan issued an urgent warning, penning: “Public health warning!!! For your own sanity and peace of mind, DO NOT watch it.”

It’s clear to see Only Fools didn’t make quite the same splash as The Office when it finally landed across the pond. But it did land a series of semi-successful spin-offs in the UK, including 2005’s The Green Green Grass, which lasted for four series.

Rock & Chips, however, acted as a prequel showing Del Boy as a youngster in the 60s and starred Nicholas Lyndhurst. The sitcom has even launched its own musical, which debuted in 2019 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London.
