A BBC Radio 1 presenter was left stunned after the swelling from his hair transplant left him “looking like Shrek’s cousin”.
Dean McCullough, who stood in for Breakfast Show host Greg James earlier this year, was recently left unrecognisable to fans after having a hair transplant. The surgery, which is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness, involves medics removing hair follicles from one part of the body to balding part of the body.
But, as with any surgery that changes someone’s appearance, it can cause some scary swelling and bruising. And that is exactly the issue Dean has been facing over the last few days.

The swelling after the operation gave him swollen cheeks and his eye had been forced closed. Despite his condition, he is keeping fans updated on his recovery – even joking that he was given “new cheekbones” and that he may now resemble an iconic animated ogre.
In the TikTok video, which has gained more than 15,000 likes, he said: “I didn’t realise when you got a hair transplant, you got new cheekbones as well. When I was researching this whole situation, there were a lot of people I saw whingeing about the swelling, but I feel like they’ve missed a trick here.
“Look at them cheekbones. Just look. People would pay good money for them. You could nearly balance a plant pot on them cheekbones.”
However, he admitted he “looked like a relative of Shrek” after the procedure. He added: “All right. I look like Shrek’s wee cousin and my eyes have never been so far apart. But in terms of bone structure, I’d give this a solid nine out of ten. Get the ogre look.”

On day three after the surgery, he added that he was “trusting the process, zero pain or major discomfort and apparently the swelling is normal”. He also joked he is in his “Avatar era” and his followers rushed to comment, insisting they never would have guessed it was him.
One wrote: “Omg it’s Dean! I didn’t even recognise you.” Another said: “The fact I thought why do I know his voice until I read your name.” Meanwhile, a third joked that he looked like “Handsome Squidward.”
