Richard Osman has revealed that he went against BBC’s The Wheel’s rules and jokingly fears he could cost the show “millions”.
The 53-year-old is set to grace our screens as one of the celebrity experts when the much-loved series makes its grand return later this year. But some of his segments could be on the chopping block so that producers aren’t left forking out a hefty sum.
Fresh from filming the show last week, Richard took to his podcast The Rest is Entertainment to spill the beans and answer curious questions from fans wanting to know more about the show’s production. Speaking with his co-star Marina Hyde, he began by heaping praise for the king of giggles Michael McIntyre, who hosts the show.
He shared: “He’s so brilliant, he’s brilliant with the punters, he’s brilliant with the celebrity experts. He absolutely drives that show through. You need constant energy on that show and he just is incredible.”
Not stopping there, Richard praised the maestro behind The Wheel’s tunes, Paul Farrer, but admits an apology might be on the cards after breaking the show’s no-singing rule. He explained: “The Wheel music is absolutely amazing.
“The one thing they said was, ‘Don’t sing along with the lyrics of the songs when you go round because they can’t use it if you’re mouthing the lyrics’. I mouthed along to every single one, I’m not sure if they can use it, I absolutely couldn’t help myself.”
Marina chuckled at the idea of him being the “£300,000 guest”, to which he responded: “It would literally cost them millions, but it was really a lovely experience.”
During the same podcast episode, the Pointless host revealed that one celebrity on the panel had to be replaced last minute due to the wheel’s motion causing them to feel sick.
As seen on TV, the contestant in the middle of The Wheel selects a category they want to tackle, hoping to win a life-changing amount of money.
To assist them, they are paired with a celebrity expert on the panel, which is selected by an energetic spin of the wheel. Richard explained: “They were nauseous, it spins pretty quick. It’s not SAS, are you tough enough? But, it’s not far off!”.
Michael has previously confessed that some celebrities were put off from participating on the show because of the spinning, with some claiming they suffered from vertigo.
He reportedly told Stuff: “There’s no vertigo! I had to keep telling them that it is a flat spinning wheel, like a turntable. It’s not a Ferris wheel. But when I was mentioning it to various people, they’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m frightened of heights’.
“I ran into David Walliams and he just kept saying, ‘Will my head get cut off?’ I said, ‘You don’t understand what I’m trying to explain to you. It’s just a round circle , like a massive tea cup’.”
