Sabrina Carpenter’s love life – ‘cheat’ claims, musical digs and jewellery hint

It’s fair to say Sabrina Carpenter is at the top of her game right now.

The US pop sensation has had a killer year, with her hit single Espresso topping year end lists on Spotify and Apple Music. Sabrina was also confirmed to be headlining a major UK festival next year, the same day her Netflix Christmas special was released.

However while the 25-year-old is riding high in her career, it appears her love life is slightly less successful.

This week, reports emerged claiming Sabrina and her actor boyfriend Barry Keoghan were “taking a break”. But her latest romance drama is not the only thing to get tongues wagging when it comes to her love life.

As well as being linked to the likes of Teen Wolf actor Dylan O’Brien and YouTuber David Dobrik, Sabrina has seen her relationships – and the fallout after them – explode on social media.

Long before her chart domination, Sabrina was best known as an actor with the Disney Channel. In 2014, she was linked with Good Luck Charlie star Bradley Steven Perry.

She spoke of how he asked her out, telling J-14: “[It was a] really unique way to ask someone out. [It was] like the pirate movies, like, they do the little bottles and they put notes in them and send them across the ocean, like one of those, and [he] put a note inside. It was cute.”

The couple split in 2015 after a year of sharing their romance on social media.

Griffin Gluck

Sabrina met Griffin Gluck on the set of Netflix movie Tall Girl in 2019. She appeared to confirm their romance when she posted a photo of them in matching Halloween costumes on Instagram.

They also attended the premiere of Pete Davidson movie Big Time Adolescence together the same year.

And while their relationship was never publicly addressed by either, it appears they split in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Joshua Bassett

The drama surrounding Sabrina really started with her relationship with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star Joshua Bassett.

They were first linked in the summer of 2020 when they were pictured together out in LA. That same year, they donned matching Halloween costumes – Shark Boy and Lavagirl – which appears to be a running move for Sabrina.

Further rumours swirled when Joshua’s ex-girlfriend and co-star, singer Olivia Rodrigo, released her debut single Driver’s License. Fans speculated it was all about Sabrina.

At the time, Olivia, who is four years younger than Sabrina, sang about “that blonde girl”, with lyrics to the song also including: “She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about.”

Fans speculated more of Olivia’s songs were about Sabrina too. The song Deja Vu sees Olivia sing about “another actress”, while Lacy has been linked to Sabrina as well.

Meanwhile, Sabrina appears to have referenced Olivia in some of her own music too.

In Skin, which was released two weeks after Driver’s License and appears to be a direct response, Sabrina sings: Maybe then we could pretend / There’s no gravity in the words we write / Maybe you didn’t mean it / Maybe blonde was the only rhyme.”

Shawn Mendes

But Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo aren’t the only two famous faces Sabrina has seemingly referenced in her songs.

Sabrina was pictured with Shawn Mendes in early 2023, later being seen together again leaving Miley Cyrus’ release party. At the time, Shawn said the pair were “not dating” – however appeared to drop a hint of his feelings for her when he wore a green pendant, coincidentally the same as Sabrina’s birthstone, to an Oscars party.

In April of the same year, exes Shawn and Camila Cabello reunited and kissed at Coachella. Their reignited romance lasted two months before the split again.

In August 2024, when Sabrina released her album Short n’ Sweet, she seemingly made a number of references to the romance – and Camila. Specifically, the song Taste and its accompanying music video appeared to be a direct dig at Shawn and Camila.

Actress Jenna Ortega played Sabrina’s love rival in the video, with the duo sparring over the same man. Sabrina sings: “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.”

It seems a little strange, considering Camila was with Shawn before Sabrina was, but fans were left convinced regardless.

Other songs from the album also include potential digs. In Dumb And Poetic, Sabrina sings: “The mushrooms aren’t changing your life.” Shawn has admitted to experimenting with mushrooms.

And it appears Coincidence also speaks of the past romance – specifically Shawn and Camila’s Coachella reunion.

Sabrina sings: “Your car drove itself from LA to her thighs / Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s playin’ sides?” Coachella takes place in Greater Palm Springs.

She then appears to take another dig at their second split, singing: “What a coincidence / Ooh, wow, you just broke up again / What a coincidence.”

Barry Keoghan

Sabrina was first linked to Saltburn star Barry Keoghan in December last year, when they were pictured together in LA. Fast forward a few months, and they were seen together at a showbiz party and then again at the Met Gala.

They made no secret of their romance as the months went on. Barry supported Sabrina in the crowd during her performances, and even appeared in her music video for Please Please Please.

And it appears a number of songs on Short n’ Sweet are also about Barry – though they may be awkward for Sabrina now considering it’s reported they have split after a year of dating.

In Bed Chem, Sabrina sings: “Who’s the cute boy with the white jacket and the thick accent?” Barry is Irish, and Barry wore a white jacket at a Givenchy event at which it’s believed they first met. Another potential reference to their differing nationalities includes: “Said you’re not in my timezone, but you wanna be.”

And while he appeared in the video for Please Please Please, it appears Barry also acted as the inspiration for the lyrics. Sabrina sings of an actor, with a different “culture”.

However this week, reports emerged that the couple had split.

Social media was then set alight that Barry allegedly cheated on Sabrina with a TikTok star. While that has not been confirmed nor deny, the TikToker in question, Breckie Hill, has been doing little to dampen the flame, reposting videos on the social media app about the rumours.
