Saltburn’s most iconic scene had some viewers storming out of cinemas as the 2023 film upped the raunch factor – and it involved protagonist Oliver Quick slurping up his friend’s bathwater.
Of course, water wasn’t the only thing in the bath, as his Oxford Uni BFF Felix Catton had been pleasuring himself in the bath while Oliver watched on, rapt. And while the water was draining, he rushed over to put his mouth to the plughole and slurp up whatever was left.
In real life, the situation sounded nearly as grim, with production designer Suzie Davies finally explaining what they used behind the scenes to achieve the milky consistency that had some fans retching. In a specially constructed bathroom on location at Drayton House, the team struggled to find a tub long enough to fit Jacob Elordi’s six foot five frame.

She explained to Business Insider that despite the house boasting 127 rooms, no bathroom fit the bill. She said: “[We used] a spare bedroom with tapestry on the walls and a cream colour. We pulled out the bedroom, and I put the tiles on the floor. We put the bathtub there. We found that wallpaper that looks like muscles. We painted it high-gloss black. We painted the ceiling, and then we built those two vanity units with all the reflections.”
To get the actors in the mood, Felix’s aftershave was sprayed around the room – and the next task was finding a claw-footed tub that was large enough, complete with a yellow rubber duck. She headed to a junkyard with 20 different tubs, but none worked.
Further restrictions meant the tub had to be light enough to cope with the thin floor, meaning a cast iron one would fall right through due to weight limits. Instead, a fibreglass reproduction was constructed by the team, a hole chopped in the side for the slurping close-up.
She explained: “We wanted it to feel lived in. I started looking at different drains all in different looks of age.” Edible paint was used to create the faux rust around the drain.
As for what Barry ended up licking, it was a combination of “yoghurt and a bit of milk and some water”. Suzie added: “He did it four times and really went for it. Every one he did was a different kind of slurp.”

The scene proved so raunchy that it even sparked its own merchandise – a candle based on Jacob Elordi’s bathwater. Giving the candle a sniff, the actor himself confirmed: “It smells like a washing room, like detergent. Yeah, it’s not bad.”
The soy wax candle retails at around $28, with its product description boasting: “There’s nothing quite like the smell of a quality candle, particularly when that smell is inspired by Jacob Elordi and what we imagine His Highness to smell like… Our candle aims to capture the essence of the charismatic figure of Felix Catton, promising a sensorial experience like no other.”
