The Chase fans only just realising why The Beast got his name – and it’s not his size

The Chase fans are only just realising the meaning behind The Beast’s nickname.

Mark Labbett, who goes by his alias The Beast on the ITV gameshow, is not named after his 6ft 7in height and large build, contrary to popular belief. In fact, The Beast translates to ‘la bête’ in French, which sounds extremely similar to his surname.

Over on X/Twitter, someone realised the reason and tweeted their disbelief that the nickname wasn’t referring to his size. One person said: “In fairness he has slimmed considerably in recent years,” to which the original poster branded Labbett a “top bloke”.

Another user said: “I thought they called him The Beast [because] he was super smart and won the final chases quickly,” while one baffled X/Twitter user wrote: “I was today years old when I discovered this [laughing emoji].”

Someone else joked that the discovery had “absolutely tickled them, while another The Chase fan called the revelation “a classic” as one comment read: “This has done me [laughing emoji].”

More ITV viewers said that they were “on the same page,” confessed they’d “thought that for ages” and even gasped: “No way.” One hilarious tweet said: “I thought it was cuz he liked Beauty and the Beast tbf [to be fair].”

Mark Labbett is a professional quizzer and rose to fame on ITV’s iconic gameshow The Chase. He’s been part of the “Chaser” panel since the show first began in 2009, among other quizzing icons such as Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha, Jenny Ryan and Darragh Ennis.

Mastermind Mark has a Master of Arts degree in mathematics, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in secondary education and legal CPE and LPC qualifications. He previously taught mathematics and P.E. as a supply teacher in South Wales.
