The most-recognisbale TV theme tune revealed – and it is not Match of the Day

Eastenders has the most-recognisable TV theme tune, according to a poll of telly fans.

The long-running soap’s signature song ranked top of the most well-known opening ditties, closely followed by rival Coronation Street.

In 1986, lyrics were added to the Walford show’s familiar ‘duff duff duff’ melody, leading to the song Anyone Can Fall in Love.

Anita Dobson, who played landlady Angie Watts, recorded the tune and it peaked at number four in the UK chart.

Eastenders came out on top

Dobson performed the song, composed by Simon May, on Top of the Pops.

Friends was third on the league table followed by Doctor Who.

Match Of The Day received 44% of the vote.

Its memorable tune was composed for the programme in 1970 by Barry Stoller in the basement recording studio of his home.

Only Fools and Horses also made the top 10.

Its theme song was by show creator and writer John Sullivan, which surprises some fans who believe it sounds like actor Nicholas Lyndhurst.

One said “I was shocked when I found out it was actually John Sullivan because it sounded so much like Rodney, it’s crazy.”

Catherine Lees, of Sky TV which did the research, said: “A catchy theme tune can really elevate a TV show.

“Whether it’s the claps from Friends or the dramatic opening bars from Game of Thrones, they set the tone for what’s to come.”

Others which repeatedly score highly as our favourite ever theme tunes include nostalgic racing show Grandstand and comedy Red Dwarf, which starred Craig Charles.

The opening music of Inspector Morse and Downton Abbey were also the most popular in a Classic FM poll.

Composer John Dunn said: “If you analyse the harmony of the Downton Abbey theme, it’s much more like a Coldplay song, except it’s performed in a classical sort of manner.”
