UK Eurovision entry Olly Alexander issued crushing blow just hours before live final

UK’s 2024 Eurovision entry, Olly Alexander has been handed an “embarrassing” blow ahead of his performance at the Grand Final.

All eyes will be on the 33-year-old pop star when he takes to the stage on Saturday (May 13) to perform his tune Dizzy. Olly will be joining 26 other acts in a bid to take home to the Eurovision trophy.

Olly gave fans a taste of what they can expect on the big night selfie this week during the semi-final. For his racy routine, Olly frolicks around the showers of a boxing gym with hunky dancers, clad in a white vest.

And while Olly is no doubt gearing herself up for possibly the biggest performance of his life – it appears he won’t be able to replicate the success of past acts including Sam Ryder – who placed second in 2022.

Ahead of the final, which is taking place in Sweden, Olly has been issued a major blow. Bookmakers Best Payout Online Slots have priced Olly at an “embarrassing” 250/1 to win the show. As for who could become the champs, the bookies have odds of 5/6 for Croatia to win.

A Best Payout Online Slots spokesperson said: “A well-received semi-final performance by Israel has slashed their odds from 50/1 to 2/1, making them second-favourites to win this year’s Eurovision. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom are likely to suffer another embarrassing result, with odds of 250/1 to win.”

It comes after Olly’s performance divided BBC viewers on social media. Eurovision fever gripped the globe once more on Tuesday (May 7) when the iconic competition kicked off with its first semi-final in Sweden.

Opening proceedings was Eleni Foureira, Cyprus’ ex-contestant, who dazzled with her glittery get-up and a posse of dancers in noir. But it was Olly’s first performance for the UK in the competition that really got tongues wagging.

The pop star, famed as a member of Years and Years, hit the stage to perform his song Dizzy. He brought the heat in the routine for his first solo-penned single, which saw Olly and his dance troupe writhing around in the shower of a boxing gym.

But the debut sparked complaints. Rushing to X, formerly Twitter, one complained: “Had high hopes for the UK @Eurovision this year with Olly Alexander but it sounded a little ropey at the semi-final just now.”

Another was blunt in their critique: “#eurovision Shockingly poor singing there from Olly Alexander.” A viewer shared their disappointment, stating: “#EUR02024 sorry but I don’t think much of #OllyAlexander Dizzy UK entry. Set and production poor.”
