Adolescence star Owen Cooper has opened up on his breakout role in the Netflix hit, admitting that he was teased by his school mates after changing his image for the character
Teen sensation Owen Cooper was “teased” for changing his appearance.
The actor opened up about being ripped at school for a week after getting a drastic haircut for his newest acting gig for Adolescence on Netflix. He spilled the beans on This Morning, confessing he snipped off his trademark floppy fringe for the part.
Grilled by presenter Ben Shephard about his new ‘do, Owen quipped: “It was for the role and it does really fit the role as well, but you’ve got to go back to school on Monday without your floppy bits?”.
Owen replied: “No, I’ve been in school without all this and there was about a week where I was taken the mick out of but they’ve gotten over it now.”
15 year old Owen has been making waves as the standout talent in Netflix’s newest sensation Adolescence – Stephen Graham’s four-part thriller series telling a chilling tale of a young lad cuffed for murder.
Since its Netflix debut, the show’s been basking in rave reviews from viewers and ushering in Owen’s first foray into the acting world, reports the Mirror.
Owen plays Jamie, a 13 year old who finds himself in hot water after he’s nicked for allegedly assaulting his classmate Katie. Line of Duty star Stephen Graham, the brains behind the show, takes on the role of Jamie’s father Eddie while Top Boy’s Ashley Walters slips into the role of detective Luke Bascombe.
The up-and-coming teen actor may be a fresh face in showbiz, but he has a connection to Coronation Street’s very own Tina O’Brien. Just recently, the star dropped the bombshell that Owen honed his acting skills at her very own acting academy.
Jumping onto social media, she posted a shoutout from fellow actor Rico Morris who praised Drama MOB for laying “building the foundations to this talent”. Tina wrote: “Elitist mentality that anything in the North isn’t worth mentioning.”
Fighting back, Tina declared: “Thank you for highlighting this Rico. We work incredibly hard at the Drama MOB and we are very proud of the work we do and will continue to do.”
Owen received some serious applause for his portrayal of Jamie. Chilled to the bone during an intense pre-trial assessment scene in the third episode, co-star Erin Doherty didn’t hold back when chatting with Variety, stating: “It was genuinely scary.”
Talk about getting lost in the part, Erin gushed: “It’s every actor’s dream to get to a place where you forget yourself and you are in this strange reality that you’ve created. It sounds bizarre, but you genuinely do believe it in the moment.”
