Amanda Holden has opened up about her 15-year marriage to husband Chris Hughes, joking there are times when she has to tell him to “leave the room”
Amanda Holden has opened up about her marriage with husband Chris Hughes.
The Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) judge, 53, tied the knot with record producer Chris, 52, in 2008. The pair have gone from strength to strength ever since and share their two daughters, Lexi, 19, and Hollie, 13.
Amanda occasionally posts snaps of Chris and has told fans she married her “best friend”. However, she’s not afraid to admit he winds her up from time to time – and sometimes she jokingly tells him to “leave the room”.
She has revealed that humour in their relationship has been one of the secrets to their success, and has helped them when times get tough. Ahead of the new series of BGT, she told MailOnline: “Chris and I have always been able to find humour in the darkness.
“He doesn’t dwell on drama. Sometimes people don’t get his humour and I’ll say to him, ‘Leave the room, you’re not reading it very well’.”
She said that Chris sometimes still chased her around the house “like Benny Hill” and enjoy date nights, so it sounds like they know how to keep the spark alive. Amanda explained: “There’s no wokery in our house. We don’t hold anything back, and we have strong opinions.
“We try to have a date night every Thursday when we go to the theatre or have dinner, or we lock the door and watch Netflix and the kids just have to do their own thing.
She admitted he can get on her nerves and vice versa as she continued: “He’s a busy person as well so I get butterflies thinking about seeing him. We also wind each other up something chronic, but that’s why we’ve been together since 2003.”
One time, Amanda accidentally put an expensive piece of clothing in the washing machine that caused her husband to “hit the roof”.
She likened her husband to a lazy teenager on her Heart radio show, saying: “Yes it is basically, another one. I just scoop them [his clothes] up, I’m sick of it, I just scooped them up and put them straight into the washing machine,”
“He comes up and he goes absolutely nuts at me, ‘Oh my God why can’t I leave anything where I want, without you…’ and I said, ‘If it’s on the floor it’s going in the wash!'”
Amanda said it wasn’t a posh piece of clothing that Chris was concerned about, it was a Muppets themed jumper. She said: “Anyway hung up, in our room where the washing machine is, is a hoodie and on the back is a huge picture of Animal from The Muppets playing the drums, and that is the top he was worried I had ruined.”
