Professional dancer Amy Dowden was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 after she found a lump the day before she headed on her honeymoon with husband, Ben Jones
Amy Dowden shared a health update two years on from her initial cancer diagnosis – just days after she announced she’s returning to the Strictly ballroom.
The professional dancer told her fans to “live and appreciate everyday,” as she admitted that she is feeling better than she ever has. Two years ago, the 34-year-old was diagnosed in 2023 after finding a lump in her breast the day before going to the Maldives on her honeymoon with fellow professional dancer Ben Jones. She documented her experience receiving a mastectomy and chemotherapy and revealed in February 2024 that “no evidence of disease” was found during her latest health check.
Taking to Instagram to celebrate her progress, Amy shared a photo of herself looking radiant in a green pleated dress with a cut out across the midriff. Her blonde locks were sleeked back and she wore glamorous makeup. She also paired the photo with a snap from the middle of her treatment.
She captioned the post: “Two years ago I found my lump and my gut instinct told me it wasn’t good. I was in Blackpool about to do a full day in the ballroom with all my students. That morning in the shower is when my heart sunk. I was also flying off on my long awaited honeymoon the next day.”
Amy noted she couldn’t stop thinking about the lump while away. She even thought it could be the last holiday with her husband.
She continued: “It’s crazy how dates become so significant after a cancer diagnosis. So much has changed since then but I am so proud of how far I’ve come. The first picture was taken last night celebrating my confirmed return to Strictly later this year compared to me mid treatment, is two very different versions of me.
“I constantly dreamed about getting the old ‘me’ back and you know what, this year has been everything, and so much more, two back to back dancing tours-my body feeling stronger and fitter than ever.
“2025 I always said sounded like a good year. But what I have certainly learnt along the way is not to compare myself to others, learning the full process of recovery has its hurdles, takes the time it needs, both physically and mentally. I have learnt to be kind to myself! Amy added she always “got better, not bitter” and wanted to get back to her old ways.
“BUT what I really want to say and to get across is always trust your gut! You know your own body, don’t be scared to see your GP and express how you feel.
“Trust your instincts, trust your gut and remember you know YOU better than anyone else!”
Amy recently announced she was heading back to Strictly Come Dancing later this year. After a heartbreaking exit from last year’s competition due to a debilitating foot injury, the pro dancer is all set for a comeback. She won’t be alone either; this season, Amy will be sharing the spotlight with two new professional dancers.
Sarah James, Executive Producer at BBC Studios, is overjoyed at the prospect, exclaiming: “The excitement is already building for the new series, and we’re so happy to welcome back our amazing pros, plus a couple of fresh faces too! We are looking forward to welcoming two brand new professional dancers to the line-up who will help bring another unforgettable series of dazzling dance and loads more besides to viewers later in 2025.”
