Adrian Chiles highlights how Brits are split on extra pillows dumped on beds as a decorative, rather than practical, feature that have become increasingly trendy in recent years
Adrian Chiles has declared war on scatter cushions.
The grouchy TV pundit said he wishes he could “make a huge pile and torch them all”, adding: “You’d see the fire from the moon. Alternatively, pick them apart and make something useful out of them.”
Adding extra pillows to your bed as a decorative, rather than practical, feature has become increasingly trendy in recent years and is usually seen in luxury hotels.
According to experts large, square pillows placed at the back of the bed add depth and make the bedroom feel bigger.
However, Chiles moaned there are “mountains” of the soft furnishings on his own bed, which drives him mad when he has to take them off and replace them every day.
He fumed: “Every night I hurl them off the bed. Every morning they are replaced. Off, on, off, on, for ever. Serving no purpose whatsoever.”
The 58-year-old broadcaster, who reportedly lives in Chiswick, west London, with his wife Kath Viner, said he suspects the cushions have slowly increased in numbers as clueless gift givers think they make good presents.
He said: ”I’m not sure they ever get thrown out or given away. The pile, the problem, the misery just grows, pillow upon pillow. This madness must stop.”
He also took aim at bedspreads, which he reckons are “big, heavy and useless” and always end up being dragged off the bed when he stays at his mum’s.
Chiles called for a “national scatter cushion and bedspread amnesty”, telling Brits: “Post them to a facility and leave the rest to me.”
It comes after a survey found earlier this year that Gen Z likes to sleep with up to seven pillows on their beds.
According to the sleep habits study from M&S, 50% of us actually prefer three to four, with an increase in the number of 18-24 year olds opting for seven for a comfier experience.
