Legendary guitarist Brian May stepped out on stage at Coachella Music Festival last night just seven months after a stroke left him unable to move one of his arms.

The Queen bandmate performed his iconic solo in the hit Bohemian Rhapsody alongside Coachella debut act, Benson Boone on Friday night (April 11). The singer appeared on American Idol in 2021 and has since enjoyed a successful career, as his hit Beautiful Things enjoyed huge popularity. During his set, the rockstar donned a purple fur cape similar to that worn by Freddie Mercury and performed his own cover of Bohemian Rhapsody.

During the first guitar solo, Benson pointed to a guitarist at the top of the stage, who was revealed as Brian May. The rock legend appeared from underneath the stage on a raised platform to huge cheers from the crowd.

Brian then returned next to Benson by running across the stage later in the song for the well-known solo. He dressed casually in a white shirt and a pair of grey skinny jeans.

Brian interacted with Benson on stage and even punched his fist in the air to cheers from the crowd. After he finished, Brian stood next to Benson as the latter jumped off the piano onto the stage.

After they finished, the pair hugged tightly and Brian walked off slightly out of breath. The guitarist remained on stage for Boone’s award-winning single Beautiful Things.

Brian teased the performance with a series of Instagram posts promoting Boone’s set later in the evening. “Gonna treasure this moment on the plane with @bensonboone – a truly golden 22 year old prodigy. I’m proud and happy to say we are now officially pals,” he wrote alongside a photo of the two musicians on a private jet together.

Brian’s appearance came just seven months after he revealed he suffered a stroke. The 77-year-old rockstar has announced that he was rushed to Frimley Hospital in Surrey last September after suffering a minor stroke. The iconic musician said he was temporarily unable to use his left arm after the incident.

However, he insisted that he can still play guitar despite the “little health hiccup”. He took to his personal website on Wednesday (September 4) to share his frightening health ordeal. He told fans in a video: “I hope you’re all well out there.

“I’m here to bring you first of all some good news. I think good news is that I can play guitar after the events of the last few days.” He twiddled his fingers to highlight how mobility in his fingers had improved.

“I say this because it was in some doubt because that little health hiccup that I mentioned happened about a week ago. What they called it was a minor stroke and all of a sudden – out of the blue – I didn’t have any control over this arm so was a little scary.

He praised hospital staff as he added: “I have to say I had the most fantastic care and attention from Frimley Hospital where I went blue lights flashing… the lot. Very exciting!”

Brian added he was ordered to stay inside and do “nothing” but rest. It’s not the first health scare May has suffered as the guitarist survived a heart attack in 2020. He suffered chest pains while recovering from a torn muscle and trapped nerve following a gardening injury.
