A Danny Dyer lookalike contest took place in London as 12 contestants vied for the title. One woman witnessed the competition and said the photos were ‘uncanny’
Londoners were treated to a Danny Dyer lookalike contest in Hoxton Square, East London, with 12 hopefuls battling it out for the top spot.
Joysgg, a 31-year-old account and PR manager, took a break from her busy day to check out the competition during her lunch hour on July 23. She stumbled upon the event after spotting posters in the Shoreditch area promoting the quirky contest at the city looked for splitting images of the former EastEnders star.
The contestants faced off in four rounds of challenges, judged by none other than Dyer’s own co-stars from Sky’s Mr. Bigstuff, Ryan Sampson and Harriet Webb. The event was organised to drum up excitement for the show’s second season.
Joysgg shared her thoughts on the day: “It was a really fun experience.”
She added: “Even though it was clearly set up professionally, it had a very communal feel to it.
“And the Dannys were all great entertainment, especially as they were all competing just for the pride of winning.”
The first round saw audience members vote as each contestant strutted their stuff on stage, hoping to capture Dyer’s distinctive look. By the end of this round, the field was halved.
Joysgg commented: “It was a bit brutal to be honest!”.
She continued: “At this point, everyone felt like number two should be the winner.
“I even thought he was actually Danny Dyer when I first spotted him!”.
Subsequent rounds put the impersonators through their paces, testing their ability to mimic Dyer’s voice, walk, and overall persona.
Joysgg said: “The next few rounds were fun.”
She explained: “They had some classic Dyer phrases in a hat and each contestant picked one to give their best impression of.
“They also had to mimic his strut and in both these rounds, contestant number two started to fall behind.
“He looked so much like Danny but clearly hadn’t done the work on his impression.”
Each round saw one participant being voted off by the audience until it was down to the last two, at which point the judges made the final decision.
Joysgg stated: “Ultimately, when it came down to number two and three in the final round, the judges voted for number three.
“I feel like number two knew he hadn’t quite managed to snag it, despite the strong start.
“As far as I could tell, the winner didn’t walk away with any specific prize, just the pride of winning.
“It just ended up being a total Dyer love fest!”.
