EastEnders star and BBC legend dies aged 73 as tributes paid to ‘remarkable man’

The beloved star, who had a memorable appearance in EastEnders back in 2002, has sadly passed away at the age of 73, after years of working with the BBC and featuring on Radio 2

Beloved BBC composer Robin White has died at the age of 73.

The BBC has lost a number of its stars in recent weeks., including Radio 1 legend Andy Peebles, Bargain Hunt seller Stuart Withers, and Still Game actor Jimmy Martin. It has now been announced that conductor Robin White has passed after an incredible career.

News of his passing was confirmed on his website, where visitors are greeted with the message: “Robin White died in March 2025. This site will stay up as a memorial to this remarkable man.”

The Classical Crescendo X page also paid tribute to the renowned composer, where they celebrated his recordings that regularly play on Classic FM. They wrote: “Renowned conductor and arranger Robin White has passed away at 73.”

They added: “A student of Vernon Handley, White was celebrated for his light-music and outdoor concerts, particularly at National Trust sites. His recordings remain a staple on Classic FM. #RIP #MusicLegend.”

Robin trained at Imperial College and the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied conducting and orchestration. He conducted a number of orchestras and ensembles over the years, and many open-air, pop-classics concerts at National Trust properties and similar venues across the south of England and the midlands.

Back in January, Robin’s New Year’s Day concert with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra at Westminster’s Smith Square Hall was deemed a “triumph”. This Is London wrote: “The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra played not only superbly, but with a sort of infectious joy [with] a first-class team of soloists from Maida Vale Singers”.

They concluded: “It was a tremendous performance … and we all wished the music would go on longer.”

Throughout his career he worked extensively with choirs, and in December 2002 appeared in the BBC soap EastEnders. It saw him appear on the Walford soap with his own Alban Voices choir in a “pivotal” episode that year.

Robin and his late wife, Freda, formed the chamber choir over 20 years ago. It was originally a choir for St. Albans Abbey.

The Alban Voices also featured on his most recent recording, American Choral Classics, which was released in June 2023 and featured Robin’s arrangements of traditional songs.

His arranging work was broadcast by BBC orchestras on Radio 2 light-music programmes. It was also featured by the Australian Pops Orchestra in a live concert in Melbourne.

His recording of Edwardian light music for Chandos in 1992,by his own Southern Festival Orchestra, has been played extensively on Classic FM. This recording led to an invitation from Silva Classics to record Noel Coward’s original ballet scores with the City of Prague Philharmonic.

Robin’s other recordings include Music for a Royal Wedding and The Perfect Fool for Classic Fox Records. His conducting repertoire included everything from Mozart and Beethoven to Schubert and Tchaikovsky and Wagner.
