Spinach sadly isn’t enough to satisfy Popeye in this savage upcoming slasher flick, as the beloved sailor man is transformed into a horrifying “killing machine”
Popeye has turned into a blood-thirsty killer in a gruesome new horror film.
The beloved sailor man is the latest cartoon character from your childhood to get a gruesome makeover in a disturbing horror-comedy. Winnie The Pooh went from a honey-loving bear to a blood-thirsty monster, and Sleeping Beauty has become a gore-filled Disney-inspired massacre.
And now, Popeye is getting turned into nightmare fuel in Shiver Me Timbers, one of three Popeye horror movies in the works. Yes, that’s right, the public domain character has two other horror movies coming out in 2025 – Popeye the Slayer Man and Popeye’s Revenge.
But this is the first horror-comedy and it follows Olive Oyl, her brother Castor and their friends who go on a camping trip to see a meteor shower – before things take a turn for the absolute worst. Unfortunately, a meteor turns Popeye into an “unstoppable killing machine” (hate when that happens).
If you thought it was just spinach Popeye was into, you’d clearly be wrong, because now he’s thirsty for blood, apparently. A new trailer for the savage film, slated for US release in April, sees Popeye hunting down the screaming teens on a deadly rampage in the woods.
The film depicts Popeye as an older sailor living a simple fisherman’s life until the meteor corrupts him and he decides to destroy everything in his path. It appears to pay homage to horror classics like Friday the 13th, with Popeye following in the footsteps of Jason in his pursuit of youngsters just trying to have a good time.
It all descends into chaos in the dark as a brave Olive tries to fight back with a chainsaw. The trailer ends with Popeye saying one of his famous catchphrases: “Well, blow me down.”
A teaser for the film reads: “Blending classic slasher thrills with off-the-wall comedy, Shiver Me Timbers pays homage to 80s horror while bringing Popeye into his most terrifying adventure yet”. It’s hailed as a “blood-soaked, laugh-out-loud voyage”.
And a summary reads: “In Northern California during the summer of 1986, Olive Oyl, along with her cinema- obsessed friends and brother Castor, embark on a once-in-a-lifetime camping trip to witness the dazzling meteor shower accompanying the arrival of Halley’s comet.
“But what starts as a serene evening of stargazing quickly turns into a harrowing nightmare when a meteor from the comet transforms Popeye, into a terrifying and unstoppable killing machine.”
The film, directed by Paul Mann, has been acquired by Gravitas Ventures, for North America. It will also be marketed at the Euoropean Film Market in Berlin.
