George Clooney surprises fans by taking French citizenship — here’s why he really did it

George Clooney, Amal and their twins are now French citizens, citing strict privacy laws that shield children from paparazzi as a key reason for the move

George Clooney, along with his wife Amal and their twins, has officially become a French citizen, according to an official decree published in France’s government gazette.

The announcement confirms what the Hollywood star hinted at earlier in December, when he complimented France’s strict privacy laws that protect children from paparazzi intrusion.

“I love the French culture, your language, even if I’m still bad at it after 400 days of courses,” Clooney told RTL radio at the time.

“Here, they don’t take photos of kids. There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s number one for us,” he added, highlighting why France appealed to the family.

The actor and director has long had ties to Europe, dating back well before his 2014 marriage to Amal, the British-Lebanese human rights lawyer who is fluent in French.

Clooney owns a scenic estate on Italy’s Lake Como, bought in 2002, and the couple purchased a historic manor in England. In 2021, they added a property in southern France to their portfolio: Domaine du Canadel, a former wine estate near Brignoles.

They also have an apartment in New York and a property in Kentucky, while selling homes in Los Angeles and Mexico over the last decade. The couple are parents to eight-year-old twins.

Although the family travels frequently, Clooney told RTL that their French residence “is where we’re happiest,” emphasizing how much the country has come to mean to them.

Clooney has earned two Oscars in his career – one for Best Supporting Actor in 2006 for Syriana and another as a producer on 2012’s Argo.

He is not the only Hollywood figure drawn to French citizenship sd director Jim Jarmusch also told France Inter radio that he plans to apply.

“I would like a place that will allow me to escape from the United States,” Jarmusch explained, adding that French culture is a big part of the appeal.
