Pedro Pascal’s much-loved Joel has met a grisly end in the TV version of The Last Of Us, but it was done a little differently in the video game the show is based on
The Last Of Us’ Joel was killed off in season two in a scene that has left fans reeling. Though fans of the video game would have been expecting it.
The character, who is played by Pedro Pascal, was loved by fans as he steered teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) through a nightmarish post-apocalyptic US in which most people had been taken over by a parasitic fungus called Cordyceps. The pair made it through the first series, fighting off the infected and getting to a safe settlement.
But not long after series two dropped, Joel’s fate was revealed. The new season saw a horde of the infected descending on the snowy settlement where some of the last humans remained.
Then in a shocking twist, Joel ended up being killed off by newcomer Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). Taking revenge for her father’s death, she beat him and stabbed him, leaving fans devastated.
However, the scene was played out differently in the TV show to the way it was in the video game that the series is based on.
In the game, Joel and his brother Tommy rescue Abby from the infected. The scene where the town gets invaded doesn’t happen.
But when Joel introduces himself, she shoots him in the leg and then starts to beat him with a golf club. He appears to know what’s coming, telling Abby and the rest of her group: “Why don’t you say whatever speech you have got rehearsed and get this over with.”
Ellie, who is thought to be immune from the virus, gets there in time but doesn’t manage to save Joel after being beaten herself. She is there as he takes his last breath.
In the TV show, a group of infected people swarm on the town and it’s Ellie who has headed out on patrol. However, the grisly death itself is similar.
Abby also shoots Joel in the leg in the TV series and it’s a golf club she uses to beat him, before stabbing him in the neck with it. But Abby has more to say on the small screen, giving viewers more of an insight into her reasoning.
As the heartbreaking episode wrapped, many viewers were left assuming that Ellie will now be out to avenge Joel’s death. While not her dad, she viewed him as a father figure after they survived the virus together.
One person posted on X: “My boyfriend plays the video game The Last of Us and I watch the TV show… I’m over here asking him does Ellie get Abby back because I can’t believe she did that to Joel!” Another said of Abby: “I can’t wait to see Ellie kill all her f****** friends.”
“Ellie and Abby on a collision course not of their own making but one they cannot escape,” pointed out somebody else. “No one is a hero. Everyone is a villain.”
