TV presenter Mel Giedroyc revealed Sue Perkins was groped by the late ventriloquist Keith Harris’ puppet Orville The Duck in the 90s whilst they were filming a show
Mel Giedroyc has recalled an awkward and bizarre incident from when she used to present Channel 4’s Light Lunch with Sue Perkins in the 1990s.
On the Parenting Hell podcast, Mel recalled an incident involving children’s entertainer Keith Harris and his famous green puppet, Orville.
In one episode in 1997, Keith appeared as a guest on the show along with Orville, the nappy-wearing puppet. Mel revealed how, during filming, Orville got inappropriately physical with Sue, who was just 27 at the time.
“Orville got a bit naughty with Sue. Harris through Orville got a bit naughty Nineties,” Mel said. Host Rob Beckett joked: “Of course you forget there’s a hand in there,” which Mel replied: “There’s a ruddy hand.”
Mel went on that all three puppet acts Keith Harris with Orville, Roger de Courcey with Nookie Bear, and Matthew Corbett with Sooty were bizarrely fixated on Sue.
She spoke of tension among the puppeteers, with de Courcey seeming to despise Corbett’s skill. “There was a cold atmosphere around the table. Harris was in the middle of it, all over Perks’s grill,” she continued. “She was the honey trap. I was the fly buzzing around the edge.”
Despite these odd encounters, Mel noted they had fun times on their Light Lunch days, which concluded in 1999. The duo moved on to huge success hosting The Great British Bake Off. Mel even revealed she shared a kiss with a young Dermot O’Leary, who was a runner on the show at the time, stating: “There was a lot going down, it should’ve been called Heavy Lunch.”
In other news, Sue recently shared a strange story on the Dish from Waitrose podcast, hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett. She described attending the birthday party of a spiritual friend that ended in a weird ritual performed by an American shaman who administered raspberry vodka enemas. “He’d blow it… a high-strength blow into our a********,” she recalled. “It was electrifying.”
The bizarre experience occurred in a hot tub at 4am, and although she wouldn’t reveal which partner was involved, Sue has previously been linked to Anna Richardson, Rhona Cameron, Emma Kennedy, and Kate Williams. “It brought me closer to a sense of myself, if not the universe.”
