Netflix has confirmed that one of its hit shows won’t be returning for a new series.

Fans of Heartstopper have been desperately waiting to find out the fate of the hit LGBTQ+ drama series. The third season of the beloved coming-of-age drama, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, launched in October 2024 – and made us ugly cry.

It’s been revealed that there won’t be a season four of the show. However, fans will get to find out what happens to lovers Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) as the streaming giant has greenlit a feature-length film, meaning the show will get a proper ending.

The announcement came on Tuesday (April 22) – the third anniversary of the show’s first season premiere. The film will be written by Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman herself, with filming set to begin this summer.

Announcing the news, Alice said: “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story. I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”

Alice has said the movie will draw from the upcoming sixth and final volume of her graphic novels. The release date for the movie is not yet known.

Her final Heartstopper book is still being written and also does not have a release date. However, she has suggested that she’d like the last book to be published ahead of the film.

Netflix also shared the news, writing on Instagram: “A heartstopper movie, our final chapter based on alice oseman’s upcoming volume six, is coming [sic]”. Many fans were delighted at the news, although many wished they were getting another series in order to get as much content as possible.

Season one of Heartstopper covered the first two volumes of Alice’s books, the second series was based on volume three, and the third was comprised of volumes four and five. The film will pick up at the end of Season three, which saw Nick, Charlie, and many of their friends take their relationships to a new level.

Nick is preparing to leave for university and Charlie is becoming more independent at school, and the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh heavily on them. Their relationship is about to face its toughest challenge yet.

Oseman previously revealed how she had been fighting to get the show renewed. “I’m working very hard behind the scenes to get us a renewal for Heartstopper,” she wrote in February.

“There are so many people behind the scenes who are working really hard to make it happen. We’re feeling optimistic, we’re feeling hopeful.”

Nick star Kit Connor also confirmed he wanted to return, but only if it was “done right”. He said: “I just want to make sure that we keep the heart in it. So, we are working on something, and hopefully we’re making it happen.”

The first season of Heartstopper received nine nominations and five wins for the inaugural ceremony of the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.
