Pete Doherty in ‘worse health’ now than on heroin due to one major thing

The Libertines singer and former flame of Kate Moss Pete Doherty has confessed he finds himself in ‘worse health’ now than when he was hooked on heroin because of his new diet

Indie rocker Pete Doherty, who was once linked to Kate Moss, told fans at a recent gig that he is in “worse health” now than when he was on heroin because of his newfound diet of booze and cheese.

He has since relocated to France and has found love and happiness as well as managing to kick hard drugs, but Pete’s new lease of life has taken a toll on his health. Doherty told the crowd at one of his recent shows that he is at risk of losing some of his limbs if he doesn’t sort things out.

Pete, 45, told fans how he is facing having to amputate his toes due to his health battle with Type 2 diabetes. He was diagnosed with the condition last year, and has had to perform while sitting in a chair at times.

While playing in Munich, Germany, he updated fans about how his health is doing. He revealed: ‘I saw the doctor today and he said you need to stay off your feet as much as you can otherwise you’ll lose your toes.’

The risk of foot or leg amputation is high for people with severe diabetes. According to the NHS: “Foot problems such as ulcers and infections, which can sometimes result in you needing surgery to remove your foot or leg (an amputation)”

Doherty previously talked about the diagnosis, confessing: ‘I’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes – and at the moment, I’m lacking the discipline to tackle cholesterol.’ He also told The Guardian that he had replaced his drug addiction with food and drink.

Pete explained: “I gave up the main poisons and my health improved. Then you get told alcohol and cheese and sugar are just as bad and you were healthier when you were on heroin.”

He went on to call himself “a bit of a glutton”, as well as telling Louis Theroux he is a “a very sick man” and at times does not think he will live long, claiming “death is lurking” due to his hard living.

The rocker told the Evening Standard: “I have seen a liver doctor who says I need to change my diet – too much cheese, too much milk. But the cheese is so good, that’s part of the reason I stay here.

“It’s a cholesterol and diabetes thing now, but there are tablets, it makes a big difference.” He told The Sun about his new found guilty pleasures: “I like Comté, Comté on toast.”

He added: “My guilty pleasure is sleeping. For years and years, I would stay up for five or six days and then I would sleep for 24 hours, so now I love sleep.

Pete confirmed: “At the moment I’m quite clean. I stopped taking heroin and ketamine.”

“I like experimenting, making cocktails with champagne, a bit of rum, orange juice, I’m coming across like a bit of an alcoholic, but I’m not — I like a nice glass of water.” He married Katia De Vidas in 2021, just two days after announcing their engagement.

The couple went on to have a daughter, Billie-May, born in May 2023. Pete also has a 21-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter from previous relationships.

A local resident in Normandy said of the musician: “Peter is no longer a bad boy – he’s relaxing, settling down and loving the goods things in life. We introduced him to pétanque and he’s fallen in love with the game.”

“He often joins our club nights when we play.”
