Richard Osman has spoken out about the Gino D’Acampo scandal, saying the celebrity chef “had to go” after a number of allegations of inappropriate behaviour emerged
Pointless maestro Richard Osman has weighed in on the hot water chef Gino D’Acampo’s found himself in, after the TV star’s shows got yanked off the airwaves. Speaking on his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, with journalist Marina Hyde, he probed why it took donkey’s years for the claims about the ex-This Morning fave to come to light.
Just last week, an ITV News threw light on allegations that Gino, 48, was accused of “distressing” and “sexually inappropriate” conduct with a list of individuals making claims over his “unacceptable” and “horrendous” behaviour from the past decade.
Telly guru Osman – whose TV smarts span the likes of Deal or No Deal and Whose Line Is It Anyway – pondered on why ITV axed D’Acampo’s gigs following the bombshell reveal. The brainy host mused: “You could look at it on one level and some of the papers have done and certainly a lot of the commentators have done and say, ‘Oh my God, you can’t say anything anymore, this is a huge overreaction, yada yada yada.'”
Before adding: “People do not lose their job just because they said a couple of things a couple of times. It’s a pattern of behaviour, it’s upset a number of people over a number of years,” according to a report from the Mirror.
He detailed how the persistent nature of the misconduct eventually led to people coming forward. “We’ve said before on this show, if you’re in trouble as a presenter but actually your crew loves you and people who work with you go ‘That’s just what they do and he’s a really decent guy,’ then you don’t get fired”, reports OK!
He then clarified that it often requires more than one event for consequences to ensue: “There has to be a whole series of things that happen, it has to go on long enough and for it to be tiresome enough – which is the word we never use.”
Earlier, Marina weighed in on the potential reasons for Gino’s alleged actions being ignored, saying: “It’s interesting that nobody confronts in that situation and there’s lots of different reasons. There’s a sort of reason that it’s just Gino being Gino and there is very much a persona that he has been encouraged to play up to.”
She also touched on the financial implications, explaining that Gino’s shows are budget-friendly and dealing with his behaviour could cause major interruptions.
“There are these constant value judgements being made by people. ‘How bad is it?'” she observed.
