Sex-crazed rabbits wreaked havoc during the filming of Father Ted.

The hit Irish sitcom’s producer Lissa Evans has revealed behind the scenes secrets in a new book.

She said: “I don’t know how many rabbits there were, but from the moment they arrived on set, they didn’t stop sha**ing – sha**ing and hiding behind furniture.

“The wonderful stage manager and her team spent the entire evening either preventing the rabbits from hiding under tables and chairs or attempting to separate sex-crazed couples.

“Every single shot could potentially have had a pair of sha**ing rabbits in the background, although it wasn’t only sha**ing that occupied them.”

The series two episode, called The Plague, centred on a visit to the parochial house from rabbit-phobic Bishop Brennan to find the place over-run by the animals.

And in her new memoir Picnic on Craggy Island: The Surreal Joys of Producing Father Ted, the telly-maker told how the problems with the bunnies didn’t stop there.

Lissa added: “At the end of the recording, I went to meet Frank Kelly and Jim Norton as they came off set, after a scene in which [their characters] Father Jack and Bishop Brennan wake up in bed together, covered in rabbits.

“Both men were walking rather strangely, trying not to let their arms touch their bodies, and both looked utterly revolted and outraged.

“’We are covered,’ intoned Jim, in that marvellous voice, ‘in rabbit urine and rabbit sperm’.”

The scenes depicting the fictional Craggy Island were actually filmed in County Clare.
