Sex Pistols front man John Lydon has divulged that his love of the guff-producing Brussels sprouts comes from growing up so poor he once had to share a tin of soup between his brother and his parents
Sex Pistol legend John Lydon has revealed how he loves wolfing down plates of Brussels sprouts.
The 69-year-old Pretty Vacant singer – aka Johnny Rotten – said his family were so poor they didn’t have much to eat and lived in a two-room house in north London. He said that they were so skint that he and his brother Jimmy once had to share one tin of soup with their parents, John and Eileen Lydon.
The Public Image Ltd singer said his parents also often also fed him on sprouts – known to make you parp – because they were ’so cheap’.
Sprouts, which were first cultivated by Belgians – hence the name – in the 13th century – are often picked as the UK’s ‘most hated’ veg.
They contain a ‘complex sugar’ called raffinose, which is difficult for humans to digest, leading to increased gas production by gut bacteria to help break it down.
This, in turn, ensures guffs aplenty as our tums go to work.
Speaking earlier this month, John said he had grown up on sprouts and had learned to love them.
He said: “I recall one time when my mum, my dad and my younger brother Jimmy and I all shared one tin of mulligatawny soup that an auntie had given us.
“The curry flavour in it was, to my young tastebuds, awful. It was inedible, so I preferred starvation.
“That said, I developed a liking for Brussels sprouts at a very early age because they were cheap.”
Last year the punk icon revealed that flies are attracted to him, resulting in an abundance of critters and wildlife at his luxe Malibu pad.
Speaking about home life, John said local wildlife congregates around him when he sits outside.
He says he is “very familiar” with bobcats, lizards and flies as he relaxes on his decking. He added the flies are attracted to him, the lizards to the flies, and the bobcats to the lizards.
The singer said: “I’m very familiar with the local wildlife. The bobcat sits up on the deck near me, preening itself.
“There are a lot of lizards that gather around me too. I suppose this is because I attract flies, which they eat.”
