Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were among the stars in attendance at Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary concert, but the pair were seen leaving the event in a hilarious skit
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were seen making a hasty exit at SNL’s 50th anniversary gig in a hilarious skit.
The Hollywood stars, who are married, jokingly stormed out of the Saturday Night Live concert – SNL50 – on Friday (February 14). Hanks has a long relationship with SNL and, back in December, sparked concerns for his health with an appearance in an SNL skit.
The event, held at the iconic Radio City Music Hall in New York City, celebrated half a century of the comedy show, as well as its musical heritage. But Hanks and Wilson ‘stormed out’ of the event when Tonight Show host Jimmy said no awards would be dished out.
Fallon joked: “Apparently, there’s been some confusion. This is just a concert. We’re not giving out any awards tonight. So I just want to make sure that everyone knows that.”
The cameras went to Tom and Rita as they walked out, hand in hand, with Rita shooting Fallon a glare before they departed the concert. Fallon called out: “Tom? Rita? We lost Tom Hanks and Rita. Sorry. It wasn’t their fault.”
Tom first hosted SNL back in 1985 and has starred in various sketches over the years. He has dubbed the comedy show the “the single most exciting thing that has happened in my career”.
Recently, in Peacock’s documentary series “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” Tom recalled his fond memories of the show.
Discussing the writers room, he said: “The fact that they just put their head down and plowed through it was actually a bit of a life lesson for me. Don’t read the bad reviews because someone out there is just going to hate your guts.”
He added: “The cliché of saying it was a dream come true doesn’t do it justice. It’s a fantasy made real.”
Tom appeared in a memorable Christmas special sketch last year alongside host Martin Short. Hanks was among a whole host of stars who gathered on Friday night for a grand celebration.
The evening boasted performances from an array of artists such as Cher, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Backstreet Boys, Foo Fighters rocker Dave Grohl, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Mumford and Sons, and Snoop Dogg. Also taking the stage were Bad Bunny, Robyn, The B-52s, Wyclef Jean, and Miley Cyrus.
