Oasis are on their history-making reunion tour after spending 16 years apart. But not even Liam and Noel Gallagher’s musical olive branch could land them a number one album. Their victors have now responded
Oasis will be looking forward in anger as their bid to reach the coveted number one album spot was flouted by a particularly hairy ‘pitted band.
Despite much of the UK descending into Britpop mania with the comeback of the Gallagher brothers for their reunion tour, the charts didn’t quite fall into the rowdy Mancunian siblings’ favour.
That’s because Isle of Wight derived indie rock band Wet Leg managed to beat the veteran musicians in the race to the top with their brand-spank-inducing album ‘moisturizer’.
Their second album, and second number one album, comes as another triumphant milestone for the band who have scooped up multiple Grammys and BRIT awards thanks to their spunky hits of ‘Chaise Longue’, ‘Wet Dream’ and ‘Ur Mum’.
But, they haven’t taken their latest accolades – a number one album and beating Oasis – with just a bow. Lead singer Rhian took to Instagram to pledge a celebratory stunt if they pipped the controversial Britpop band to the post.
And they’ve now followed through, sort of. It all started when Rhian took to Wet Leg’s Instagram where she posted a dig at Oasis and their fans – largely middle-aged men – who have found issue with her furry armpits.
“It’s only fair that you sacrifice the #1 glory of your man duo if you want to rid me of my fluff-tuffts,” she captioned the viral clip to the band’s 544,000 followers.
In the video, she shared: “According to the official charts…moisturizer will go head to head against Oasis for the number one spot. Been trying to think how I can sabotage Oasis so we nab the number one.
“Maybe I can spread a rumour that they’re really mean people. Hmmm…actually that might not work. Wait I have a better idea. According to thousands of old men on the internet…”
Rhian then shared a string of screenshots from men trolling her because she’s a woman with armpit hair. One said: “Get them pits shaved ya rotter.”
Another added: “Shave the damn armpits!!!!” While a third troll moaned: “She had retro f**** armpits gross [vomiting emoji].”
After sharing the online vitriol she receives for simply ditching the razor, Rhian continued: “I have deeply shaken them by having hair on my armpits. Some are even going as far as saying it’s bad for business
“Funny, I never expected such a response on my hair cause well…I’m not a pre-pubescent child. But I’ll strike up a deal for those who have been offended by my grizzly growlers.”
“If somehow we manage to beat Oasis to number one tomorrow [Friday 18 July]…I’ll shave the pits. And for those who don’t care that grown-ups grow hair you should grab a vinyl anyway!”
Rhian then flexed her arms, proudly showing off her hairy armpits.
Well, as we all know, Wet Leg did manage to nab the number one album spot from Oasis at the end of last week – whether Rhian’s ‘sabotaging’ scheme had any influence or not.
But, is Wet Leg’s frontwoman one of her word? Not quite.
Yesterday (22 July), the band – comprising of fellow singer Hester Chambers, drummer Henry Holmes, guitarist Joshua Mobaraki and bassist Ellis Durand – took to the beach to celebrate their win with the Official Charts gong.
They then got the shaving cream out, covering some of the trophy with it, and got their shave on. But, not all of the band got up, close and personal with the razor.
Only the blokes dared to get de-fuzzed on the beach, with Rhian and Hester maintaining their under arm hair. The caption read: “Our award arrived.
“Josh, Henry and Ellis sacrificed their tufts so that Rhian & Hester could keep their superpowers.”
Fans absolutely lapped up the women shaving the lads’ pits and flooded the comments with praise.
This Wet Leg fan said: “Instantly iconic.” Another added: “Go on the lads!” As a third quipped: “Next single: Wet Leg, Hairy Pit.”
One thing we can learn from Wet Leg is that life’s a peach (fuzz).
