The White Lotus reveals the end of the series before it really gets going in the first episode, but plenty of details are left out, meaning fans are left theorising about what will happen still
Fans of The White Lotus reckon they’ve figured out who the floating body in the water from episode one was. The series starts each season with a flash-forward, usually showing some sort of death or chaos.
This season was no different, showing Zion (Nicholas Duvernay) fleeing from the sounds of a gun and discovering a body floating in water he jumped in to. And viewers reckon the body might belong to Lochlan Ratliff (Sam Nivola) – but he might not be dead.
Lochlan has already had an explosive journey. From the first episode, viewers were predicting a weird sexual storyline with his brother Saxon and it finally came true in the most recent episode.
Actor Sam defended his character, saying he was “misguided”. But an earlier scene, in which the Ratliff brothers were told to kiss, made Saxon actor Patrick Schwarzenegger “almost throw up”, according to his co-star.
Now, fans think Lochlan could be the person Zion saw floating in the water. And it turns out, there might have been a clue hidden in the opening credits.
The opening credits for the show often feature hints at the relating actor’s storyline for the season. For example, the second season showed two men in an intimate pose next to Leo Woodall’s name, whose character Jack was caught in a compromising position with his “uncle”.
For season three, Sam Nivola’s name appears next to a shirtless man floating in some water. Fans have picked up on this, suggesting it could be linked to that first scene.
Lochlan appears to have a connection with the water, which would also support the theory. He has been obviously interested in the tsunami tragedy that hit in 2004, and was seen lounging in a hammock in the sea in an earlier episode.
He was also seen going for a dip in a sensory deprivation tank as his family had their plush treatments. There’s a hint in his name, too, with Lochlan meaning “land of lakes”.
For The White Lotus fans, the evidence is pointing at one thing only – Lochlan is the body in the water. “He’s definitely the person who ends up in the water and it’s hard for me to be convinced otherwise,” one said on Reddit.
But others have suggested it wouldn’t be that “obvious”, saying: “That’s why I’m inclined to think he won’t get killed and has to do with something.” Others with a similar thought suggested the water theme could instead link to rebirth, with Lochlan going on a journey within himself, rather than ending up dead.
Luckily (or not, perhaps) there are just two episodes left of the current season, so fans don’t have long to wait to see how it all turns out.
