She is reportedly ‘fine’ after the upsetting incident
Popular tv doctor Dr Amir Khan has been praised after a woman narrowly escaped death from choking on her dinner at a restaurant. Dr Khan had recently appeared on ITV’s Loose Women, offering guidance on how to respond when someone is choking.
His recommendations included delivering firm back blows and performing abdominal thrusts – commonly referred to as the Heimlich manoeuvre. He also discussed the appropriate time to contact emergency services. Shortly following the programme’s broadcast, Dr Khan shared a message on his Instagram from someone who credited his advice with saving a choking victim, reports Surrey Live.
A woman had allegedly been choking on her steak at a restaurant when the individual recalled Dr Khan’s guidance and intervened to assist her. “Just a message to say thank you! I saw your bit on Loose Women about what to do when someone chokes,” the message stated.
“Today, a stranger in a restaurant choked on her steak and I was able to help her because of what you demonstrated. Gave me the confidence to know what to do. She is fine and very grateful. Thank you for making me aware.”
Dr Khan responded: “Oh my god – that’s actually amazing! Brilliantly done by you.”
He added in his post: “Quite possibly one of the best messages I could receive and definitely for the whole @loosewomen team who put that segment together and allowed us to demonstrate what to do if someone chokes. Honestly so grateful to be doing what I am doing x.”
The news sparked a brilliant reaction from his followers. “Oh wow, love this,” gushed one person, whilst another commented: “Wow! Watched it too, I look after my 4 year old granddaughter, hoping I never have to use it though..”
A third person penned: “Amir you are a truly amazing doctor and a truly amazing human you are such an inspiration to those of us who are blessed and lucky to know you personally and to those who don’t. Well done too to the person who sent you this amazing message. Amir we are so proud of you and love you very much Alison X and Bob X God bless.”
Someone else shared: “I’ve been careful with steak ever since I choked on one 10 years ago and needed first aid. Very scary experience and so grateful for the help of another,” whilst another person wrote: “You really do help people more than you will ever know. Please keep doing what you do, very grateful.”
During the clip, Dr Khan outlined: “So if you notice someone choking – an adult or any age child over the age of one – come to the side of them and encourage them to cough if they are coughing. If they are coughing and they can’t get it up, get them to lean forward slightly and then with the heel of your hand, you want to hit them between their shoulder blades. You have to be quite forceful with it because you are trying to force that thing out.
“In between each back blow, look to see if it has come out. It is as hard you you can and do it five times. If that hasn’t worked, you move to the abdominal thrusts, which is the same as the Heimlich manoeuvre. You get your fist, place it just above the belly button, grab with your other hand, and what you want to do is pull upwards and inwards as hard as you can. You repeat that five times, as firmly as you can – really firmly. And between each one, check to see if it has come out.
“If that is not working, you’ve got to dial 999 and get help, but keep going with those back blows five times, and those abdominal thrusts five times.”
