Home Alone is one of the best-known Christmas films of all time, but if you took a trip down to Illinois to visit the iconic property in real life you’ll be left severely disappointed
The Home Alone house now looks completely different to how you remember it.
Kevin McCallister’s sprawling Chicago mansion has been dubbed the perfect festive house and over the years many have flocked to Winnetka, Illinois to visit the property themselves.
Some have been left seriously disappointed by the home’s modern makeover. The house was put on the market in May 2024 for $5.25 million and the online listing showed the entire house had been painted white and grey.
Film fans fondly remember the McCallister house’s bright red stair runners, maximalist patterned wallpaper, emerald green tiled kitchen countertops and huge festive fireplace – well, you’ll be sad to hear that this is no more.
Every inch of the property has received an image overhaul. The iconic entryway has been painted white and the warm mahogany wood floors have been replaced in favour of a darker, colder tone.
Gone is the bedroom’s red rose wallpaper and cosy decor. Instead, the new owners have opted for varying tones of white, grey and beige. The kitchen has been gutted and in place of the tiled units and wooden cupboards sits white cabinets, white marbled countertops and grey sofas.
Architect and Design took to Instagram to share images of the McCallister house and described the makeover as “modern, minimalist interior with white walls, open spaces, and updated fixtures.”
They wrote: “While the staircase and overall structure remain, the design reflects today’s contemporary style,” but Home Alone fans in the comment section were less than impressed. One person went so far as to say: “This made me sick to my stomach tbh.”
Someone else typed: “This is extremely upsetting,” while a second added: “Well, this made me wanna cry,” and a third: “Wow houses use to have so much character and be so signature. I hope we get back to that.” A fourth comment simply read: “Tragedy.”
